Windows Longhorn 4-bit quality only

Hey Guys, I was wondering for awhile why Longhorn is always 4-bit quality on VirtualBox.
I once tried upgrading from Windows XP.
1st part: All fine. 256 Colors!
2nd part: Messes up. 4 colors
3rd - Desktop: Stays 4 colors.

So I want to know if you guys know what's going on.

PS: I tried raising the display, did 32 colors, goes back to 4.

Because, whenever setup finishes, reboot, login, then it discovers a lot of drivers and 2 unknown. Soon I reboot, then it just shuts down on me!

Maybe it doesn't work properly anymore with VirtualBox 5, but it used to work with VirtualBox 3 and 4.

1. Depends on your build.
2. I could suggest using VMware, I had full color support on these machines and VMware Tools worked... I think. It was a long time ago.

Try VBEMP as your video driver. That should work.
If you don't know about it, google it. Should be first or second result as "Universal Vesa Video Driver" or something, use the stable version for Xp. Beware of Russian pornographic popup ads.

Ok, I've installed Longhorn 4039, now it wants me to... Activate?!?!
I try that. Nope, it fails. Then, IT LOGS ME OFF!

You didn't apply activation crack. Create WinPE iso with winlogon activation crack and replace
windows\system32\winlogon.exe with the cracked one. No need for reinstall. If ypu need the activation patch, google "Longhorn Activation Crack". You'll have to find it yourself as we can't provide links to cracks.

I use the 4xxx builds on Longhorn.

I have tested 4008 and 4051, and the color works very well.
(On VMware Workstation 8 at least. Now I'm using 11.)

VirtualBox has been somewhat of a mess lately with their recent builds. You can switch to VMware or use the built in Virtual Machine for Windows 10 Pro if you have Windows 10 Pro as your main operating system.

No, VPC is extremely slow in Longhorn.

VMWare is meant for 4074, other than the wretched VMWare tools 11 =(

Where did you get the disc image? And is your VM configuration the same as what you used for 4039?

A part of the Avalon engine in certain longhorn builds is different to any part of the DWM or WinPE in any Vista/7 OS version. It is also a different engine from the XP graphical engine. Therefore, it is incompatible with certain Virtualisation Software.
