Does the Powermac G4 not boot from cd-rw discs correctly
Does the Powermac G4 not boot from cd-rw discs correctly
I downloaded an os x 10.1 install dmg from macintoshgarden since everything I've used from there seems to work fine. But in the mean time I'm out of cd-r's so I decided to burn the image to a cd-rw. When I'm in the boot menu on the pm g4 I put in the disc and it shows up saying os x along with the hard drive icon. So when I click it and load it after 5 or 6 minutes of nothing happening the mac face logo rips in half and won't go any further. I this because it can't correctly boot from a cd-rw disc or should I try another install image from somewhere else?

I held down the option key and went in to the boot menu where you can select to boot from any device.
Basically what looks like this.

Then what you should do is try to install an older version of Mac Os, and then install 10.1 from there.mkbea1985 wrote:I held down the option key and went in to the boot menu where you can select to boot from any device.

It would help if you stated the model of G4.

Re: Does the Powermac G4 not boot from cd-rw discs correctly
It seems that all generations and incarnations of the Power Macintosh G4 can run OS X 10.1. I would suggest trying another version (Jaguar or Panther), or an earlier version (OS 9.1/9.2/9.2.2) depending on what version of OS 9 runs on your G4. I think BA has the PowerMac G4 restoration CDs for Mac OS 9. Try those.

I don't think the FW800 supports 10.1.
I'd just find the proper restore discs on the FTP and install from there.

Re: Does the Powermac G4 not boot from cd-rw discs correctly
Sorry it took me so long to respond back. The model is the Mirrored drive door with the dual 867 mhz. Yes I have been able to install os 10.2 up to 10.5 which were all disc images I used from Macintosh garden but they were burned to a cd-r. All I wanted to know is if it can't boot properly from cd-rw?
Re: Does the Powermac G4 not boot from cd-rw discs correctly
What model drive do you have? Can you confirm the disc was written and closed correctly? What speed did you use to burn the disc?
You could always try to force the machine to boot the DVD by issues one of the following two commands in Open Firmware command line (hold command+option+O+F when booting):
boot cd:,\\:tbxi
Alternatively, if that does not work:
boot cd:,\System\Library\CoreServices\BootX
Also make sure to check that the DVD drive is detected properly by running 'devalias'.

As long as the CD-RW is good, it should boot from it.

Re: Does the Powermac G4 not boot from cd-rw discs correctly
Try using a real CD-R disc. Old CD/DVD drives often had trouble reading CD-RW discs because of the higher SNR required to get a good read.
I upload stuff to archive.org from time to time. See here for everything that doesn't fit BA

I solved the problem. I had to reset the pram and then it booted into the installer just fine with a cd-rw but thanks for your help everyone.
