According to the documentation it will need ancient SCSI(Adaptec or IBM/PS2)/MCA/ESDI controllers. I will try to install it on real hw soon.
Tape support is limited to Archive and Wangtek.

It can be run in Bochs. When you make a dd copy of an UnixWare tape you get a datastream package. You can turn this package into a set of install floppies using pkgtrans (this is a standard SVR4 command), so you don't need a SCSI drive to run it. If you want to install in real hardware you'll need about 70 floppies or 140 with development system.

Actually Adaptec 1542 SCSI controller was recognized by the installer and with Archive Viper tape drive I was able to install the product.

Yes, you can use this adapter in real hardware. I used this controller with a Panther 250Si tape drive in order to install UnixWare 1.0 and UnixWare 1.1 several years ago. But now, a PC with ISA16 slots is very hard to find. In a modern PC you can also use the Adaptec 2940uw if your motherboard only have PCI slots.

In Bochs you can't emulate a SCSI streamer so if you want to install UnixWare 1.x in a virtual machine you'll need to make a floppy disc set from the dd of the streamer.
