Problem installing Windows NT 3.51 in VMware

Post by Morea »

Hi everybody!! I've just tried to install Windows NT 3.51 Workstation in a VM in VMware, using the iso image in Italian taken from the FTP server, but I have a problem: now I will explain you what I did to setup the VM, so you can see if there's something wrong
1. I've formatted my Virtual hard disk with fdisk and format c:
2. I've installed Dos 6.22
3. I've installed CD drivers for my VM
4. I've started the NT 3.51 Setup from the iso by digiting d:\i386\winnt.exe
5. I've also prepared the 3 floppy images needed for the setup
6. I let the setup copied all the necessary files
7. Then it told me to reboot and let the setup continues its process, so I did and it told me to insert the floppy image number 2
8. Then it stucks on a blue screen with 2 lines, like "Windows NT Version 3.51 (build 1057) System processor and multiprocess kernel" and it doesn't do anything else

So what can I do to surpass this problem? Help me, please! :( Thanks! :D

Set the hardware compatibility to v4. Newer versions of VMWare emulate too many PCI busses and system hardware incompatible with this version of NT.

Also, it's better if you create boot floppies with winnt /ox

That way you can just boot from those floppies to start install and no need to install DOS, you just need to boot from a DOS bootdisk to create those floppies.

I managed to install it using the floppyless (Winnt /b) on Workstation 5.x hardware profile using Workstation 11. Just remember to use fdisk and format before you use /b.
