How to setup Chicago build 99 with Internet and CD in VPC?

Post by Morea »

I want to install Chicago build 99 in Virtual PC 2007, but I need someone who teaches me all the steps to set it up correctly with Internet (I want to share my internet connection in the VM, but how to also set the connection well in Chicago?) and CD-Rom drivers. I've downloaded the iso of Chicago build 99 from the FTP server! Can someone help me, please? :D

I'm going to assume you have no experience using DOS at all with this post, given that you didn't say how much do you know. Internet would be a bit much for Chicago 99, frankly I can't remember how networking works in this build (if it uses WfW 3.11 drivers or Chicago drivers). So I'll just provide you wity a guide to install Chicago 99 and set up DOS CD-ROM drivers there.

Boot from a DOS 6.22 boot floppy image, one with CD-ROM drivers for DOS. You should be able to find one on bootdisk.com - they are WinImage self-extractors so you can use WinImage to convert them to .img, and modifying /D:BANANA to something else ( like /D:MSCD001 ) in config.sys and autoexec.bat (they need to be the same in both) would be recommended.

Then run fdisk and create a primary DOS partition, use the default settings and reboot when asked. On reboot do format c: /autotest

Run Chicago setup from the CD, (you can browse to the folder like in modern cmd.exe, if you don't know that, then Google is your friend), for Beta ID and Password use the keygen at http://5.39.80.94/chicakey.html (it might take you a couple of tries to get to the page), after setup finishes then make sure FILES= and BUFFERS= in c:\config.sys are at a high enough value (I think 80 is high enough). Do this by booting from the boot floppy image again and running edit c:\config.sys - you should be able to figure the UI out. While there (I'm assuming 99 is like 73g and needs DOS CD drivers for CD-ROM support) add a DEVICE=C:\CD1.SYS /D:MSCD001 at the bottom, then save and exit (Alt+F, S, Alt+F, X) edit c:\autoexec.bat and add MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 to the bottom there. Then run copy A:\CD1.SYS C:\ - detach the boot floppy and reboot. You should boot into Chicago fine.

If you have any problems (I may have made a mistake or two, it's been a little while since I installed Chicago in a VM) then just reply and I'll try to help.

Well, Chicago Build 99 is one of the first builds ever of win95 to include ATAPI support out of the box in esdi_506.pdr, but that support is buggy on most emulators and virtualizers.
