Longhorn 4074 vs 5048

Post by Y@riK »

Hello, everybody!
What Longhorn build is better? 4074 or 5048?

That depends on your definition of "better". Arguably 4074 is more interesting than 5048, but 5048 is far more stable than 4074. In terms of the feasibility of the underlying technology 5048 is better than 4074, but 4074 once more contains arguably more innovative technologies.

There really is no definitive answer to this. It all comes down to preference in the end.

I think 5048 is better, but as Dan says, it comes down to opinion.

Yep. That's your answer! But, I will say Windows Longhorn 4074 is the winner in my opinion. It's just about as smack-dab in the middle of LH as you can get. 5048 is after the reset, and too Vista-y for me... It's nice, though. But, then again it all boils down to your prefernce!

As said before, it's entirely based on one's opinion. Though personally, I don't recommend using LH for everyday use. Sure it may look nice, but remember it is a beta, it is untested and may contain bugs and/or security holes. Even worse, it's based on beta code (Win2k3 RC1)! So with that being said I recommend 5048 if you like stability or 4074 if you like features.

consider 5048 as win2003 with DWM and bit different shell, nothing else
4074 on another hand is something different but unstable as hell

Just a heads up, he didn't say he wanted to use it for everyday use.

I recommend 5048 clearly. 4074 is bad if you want stability, but has more features than 5048...

I personally prefer more stability and less features(5048), rather than lots of features and very little stability(4074,4093)

5048 is more towards Vista, hence, it's going to have more stability than a pre-reset build. But, for playing around w/ a beta. 4074 is true Longhorn!

But they're betas. Fair enough if it's RTM, but if it's betas you're talking about, then there is no reason to look for stability.

Completely agreed, it's a beta, for a reason.

they are not betas at all

pre-reset are alphas
5048 was developer release (aka D1) a pre-beta

of which they both aren't/weren't
pre-release would be range of 55xx

you don't pre-release half made product
that is why there are labels as alpha and beta
alpha is where development started and "goes on"
beta is adding last and smoothing out features
rc comes to term pre-release, this is where you only fix last bugs and nothing else

pre = before.
"pre-release" applies to any build before RTM.

As for beta, yes, technically it applies to a specific stage, but its generally used interchangeably with pre-release.

Stop being so pedantic.
