5.25 inch usb floppy?
5.25 inch usb floppy?
Does anyone know if there is such thing as a usb enclosure for 5.25 inch floppy disks that can read and write to any format?
Or do you think that I might have to go with a usb to isa/pci/ide adapter to connect the drive and then use an external power supply?

Re: 5.25 inch usb floppy?
Really? Because I've checked everywhere and I always find ads for 3.5 inch usb floppy drives.

That is most certainly not an enclosure. A USB adapter sure.Archenemy wrote:There is such thing as that which it proves in this topic.

Yep, it's just an adapter, and I just realized that it is read only, when I wanted to have read/write abilities so that I can write disks for old IBM PCs. And I also realized that I already visited that site and marked it off of the list, so I guess I will have to use a usb to isa/ide connector and either use an old controller card or some custom software.

You can always get a kryoflux device and connect a 5.25" drive to it. It will read any kind of floppy in raw format and then you can convert it to the proper image format when needed. Otherwise I've never seen a modern USB adapter for 5.25'' that makes it work like a 3.5'' USB drive...

I'll check it out and see if it's good for me. Judging by what I've seen with a single google search, it seems to be legit.

Re: 5.25 inch usb floppy?
No 5.25" Floppy drives for USB interface. (Exist 3.5" type only)
To use 5.25" Floppy drives on Windows
* Use old motherboard with FDC (support 5.25" 360/1.2MB Drive)
or
* USB FDC (SuperCard / Kyroflux, etc)

Re: 5.25 inch usb floppy?
Yeah technically not a full usb device, but at least it would work.
Unfortunately, I don't have the money for it.

Then try to borrow or just get a vintage MS-DOS computer with a 5.25" drive. Then you can insert the disks into it and check the status of the disks to see if they are good. And/or you can send the disks to one of us that have a kryoflux unit and we can scan, dump, and return the floppies to you within a week, and we can either upload it for you or send you a CD containing the dumps and scans.sammy wrote:Yeah technically not a full usb device, but at least it would work.

Re: 5.25 inch usb floppy?
Not just before imaging, all original floppies must be read only, there isn't a chance anyone would write anything in them.

I don't recommend to dump any disk images by Winimage. (I think Winimage is not best choice.)

Then what do you recommend then?

Re: 5.25 inch usb floppy?
I recommend to use dump all floppy disk on real DOS.mrpijey wrote:Then what do you recommend then?
Teledisk / Dcopy / Imagedisk / Wimage (Not Winimage)
Why don't recommend Winimage?
It is simple.
If any user doesn't operate correctly, WINIMAGE boot sector added on image.
Also if any sector has bad, related track and head must be ignored too.
(Example, if Track 1/Head 0/Sector 2 is bad, all Track 1/Head 0 are ignored.)
But Teledisk / Dcopy / Wimage / Imagedisk only ignore sector not readable only.)
If diskette has error, Winimage is more bad tools.
In other words, if the dumped sector is bad by Winimage, it is more difficult to fix the problem than DOS based dump tool.

Re: 5.25 inch usb floppy?
Not if you just have it read from floppy and directly write to disk. All the floppies on the FTP with WinImage boot sectors are either reconstructed floppies, ie. from folder dumps, etc., or dumps of real floppies that already had the WinImage boot sector in the first place, and not dumps of real floppies that have a different boot sector.ibmpc5150 wrote:It is simple.

Yeah, the only problem is that the only two computers that I have that support 5.25 inch floppy drives both bew out their SPUs and motherboards...
