Sonic 2 Game Gear Prototype found

Post by TheWindowsXPGuy »

Thread on Sonic Retro: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=33333

This is a very early (pre-alpha?) version of Sonic 2 for Game Gear. It is a non-playable rolling demo, but through hacking, it is possible to disable the demo. However, the game engine barely works at all, and the only objects you can interact with are rings and up-facing springs. No monitors, badniks, bosses, nothing. Only Green Hills, Sky High, and Underground zones work. Green Hills and Sky High both use the gray-and-white checkerboard graphics shown in magazine shots.

Here is a video I recorded of Green Hills Zone Act 1 with demo turned off:

Yeah, a Sonic 1 prototype would be like the Holy Grail of prototypes. I want the Tokyo Toy Show 1990 proto with the alpha Green Hill and 7 layers of parallax scrolling. This is the one I'm talking about:

Even the near-final build with UFOs in Marble Zone would be cool to see in action.

Anyway, this is a really early prototype (it's from 1991-12!) and it's buggy (of course). The other 'protos' look interesting too....

It was just like this when the 16-bit Nick Arcade beta was leaked. :P
