[REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
Hi guys,
Slowly but surely I will be putting up groups of Unix abandonware on the BA FTP (need to make sure all of it actually works first) but am always looking for more items.
Over the years much of the commercial software, games and demos for UNIX and VMS have vanished from the internet (particularly after the demise of the uu.net FTP server, where many companies posted demos and downloads).
If anyone has anything please post here or upload to BA FTP.
Things of interest that are requested:
WordPerfect for UNIX and VMS
Lotus 1-2-3 for UNIX
Corel Draw for UNIX
Framemaker for UNIX and VMS
Interleaf for UNIX and VMS
Oracle DB for UNIX (versions 8 and older)
Sybase DB for UNIX
SimCity for UNIX X11 and NeWs and Desqview/X
3d Modeling, Rendering, CAD software for UNIX and VMS
SoftPC, RealPC, Merge, VP/IX for UNIX and VMS
Anything else too of course! Rare versions of UNIX not on BA FTP always welcome!
Software can be for any UNIX version (AIX, IRIX, HP-UX, Solaris, SunOS, SCO, Tru64, Xenix, A/UX, Dell UNIX, Amiga UNIX, Atari UNIX, Interactive, Coherent, NextStep, OpenStep, etc...)
Thanks!

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
I downloaded a bunch of old archives from the early usenet days. I have yet to go through them. If I find anything that fits into what you're looking for, I'll make a note of it. There's probably just miscellaneous patches and bugfixes mixed in there, but at least we would be preserving history
16 years of BA experience; I refurbish old electronics, and archive diskettes with a KryoFlux. My posting history is 16 years of educated speculation and autism.
Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
I'd be interested in Oracle Rdb for VAX. That was once available for download from Oracle's website but has disappeared at some point... I think it was Oracle 7.something (7.3?) but probably older versions also exist(ed)

I upload stuff to archive.org from time to time. See here for everything that doesn't fit BA
Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
I'll try to look at my Linux/UNIX collection to see if I can find stuff that was downloaded off an FTP in the middle of nowhere. (Hey, that's how I got Slackware 2.3!)
EDIT: I couldn't find anything of interest to you except FreeBSD 10.0 RC4. AFAIK, they don't archive the FreeBSD betas.

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
Old UNIX patches and bug fixes would be good as many of them are hard to find.
RDB for VAX is indeed gone from the Oracle website (only the Alpha and Itanium versions are there, better snag them before they too disappear).
Older Linux that would be interesting are Caldera (had Motif and Accelerated-X) and RedHat versions (particularly the ones with TriTeal CDE)

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
Can you upload the RedHat versions as well as Caldera?
I can't find the Mandrake Linux on the FTP.
Thanks!

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
You can find the Redhat versions on archive.org. I will upload the Caldera beta next week.

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macinto ... rc-solaris
On MacintoshGarden (An Apple centered Abandonware site), the Solaris for SPARC port of Macintosh Application Environment 1.0 is available to download, sadly the HP-UX version is missing. It also requires Solaris 9 or older.

Thanks! MAE 1.0 has an unfortunate 8 hour demo limit!Gligar13 wrote:http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macinto ... rc-solaris

MAE 3.0 for Solaris is here: (but it needs a license file, even for the demo, it won't run at all without it)

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
May I add to the request list:
Adobe Illustrator for Unix (IRIX?) and for NeXTStep, seems very rare
Framemaker for NeXTStep, widely used but still rare
Some Applications for MS/SCO Xenix/Unixware should be on the FTP. That includes VP/ix, MS Word, MS Multiplan, MS BASIC, FoxBase, …
@Onyx: The text on that MAE 1.0 download page says the tgz is demo, the Toast image is full. Thanks for sharing the MAE 3.0 link.

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
I have original CDs of Photoshop and Illustrator for IRIX that came with my O2.
They are on my list of item to scan, digitize and upload to BA FTP.

I have original CDs of Tru64 5.1B if anyone is interrested.
I'll have a look for unix apps.
Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
Cool, Tru64 5.1B would be good. There is a version of it on the BA FTP but I have not checked as to how many discs that is.wr35nn89 wrote:Yeahhh !!!!Onyx_RE2 wrote:I have original CDs of Photoshop and Illustrator for IRIX that came with my O2.

Just found Illustrator for NextStep. Three floppy disks. Will upload that right away since it's so small.
Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
That's so great, thank you SO much! It's the first time I see this.
I heard about Illustrator on NeXT only because I read about it in an old NeXT book. The author wrote, TL;DR: Adobe announced it. And people were freaking out, because Illustrator was a successful title on Macintosh in the DTP sector and designers were awaiting their standard vector drawing program. Then Adobe released it after prolonged development time and people were disappointed, because the result of the Mac-to-NeXT GUI translation came out very unhandy. In the end, it was unsuccessful (and thus became quite rare).

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
I just got quite a lot of Solaris versions, and I can check what versions I have. I also have a couple of Solaris betas.
Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
Can't believe an entire year has gone by and I didn't upload the Irix stuff.
My apologies, will be working on them this weekend.
New goodies for old versions of UNIX too...

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
I uploaded a complete set of AIX 4.2 to the FTP (complete with scans and stuff) but I don't think it has hit the FTP yet. I also uploaded some IRIX CDs which also didn't all make it to the FTP yet (mainly because it's not clear on how e.g. the "support folio" CDs should be sorted as they're not strictly OS discs and also not strictly patches or service packs)
I upload stuff to archive.org from time to time. See here for everything that doesn't fit BA
Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
@Darkstar, thanks for uploading AIX 4.2.
The Supportfolio CD's should probably go under (Misc) Support, Misc right?

DG/UX stuff is great to have!

Yeah, indeed, that would be really cool more stuff to try out, yay! Could you please share it?

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
The problems are that the scan+iso images were made long time ago, and now there are new rules like high res tiff/png scans + mds dumps.

Re: [REQUEST] Unix and VMS Abandonware
When we talk about Irix / Unix / other *nix systems, user has to convert an image to standard ISO anyway to be able to use it. I really doubt there's a way to mount MDF/MDS images i.e. under Irix. So it's not the best idea to preserve non-Windows applications as MDF/MDS dumps.wbyte wrote:now there are new rules like high res tiff/png scans + mds dumps.
