Checking Centro build

Post by mrpijey »

Is there an easy way to check a build of Centro (Essential Server 2008)? Checking the normal kernel build is pointless since the Centro build differs from the OS build... so how does one check it, or do I have to install it?

Mount the SYSTEM hive from root:\Windows\System32\config in regedit and navigate to <mountedkeyname>\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. There, you'll see the BuildLab and BuildLabEx String values.

Example:

Not exactly "fast", but definitely faster than going through the entire WIM and comparing version numbers.

Oh, I forgot the "Centro" builds are apps and services on top of Server 2008. I don't know about it in that case then.

If I remember correct you have to open the WIM and look after the management console files inside the program files dir... Can't remember the exact name of the folder right now, but it was something you wouldn't find on a usual server (or client) build.
