Which Whistler/XP beta is this?

Post by Homers »

I've just discovered a page from 2001: http://www.windows-expert.net/windows-xp/gui/

It is a description of the 'next generation of Windows' (i.e. XP), but what interests me are these two images from that site:

Does anybody know which build these are from? I've seen or used every Whistler build and have never seen a Welcome screen like that, and a Start menu like that. Considering it has Luna, it should be from build 2428 or above.

EDIT: This was also mentioned/discussed on this 2014 article: http://www.neowin.net/news/gchq-warns-u ... xp-support

EDIT 2: Yes, I now know about the 'Undock PC' option

Well, the "Undock PC" option looks like it's just a laptop in a docking station. Some of the Dell laptops have options like this in the Start Menu when you Dock them.

Looks like you haven't read my post correctly. I said that I got these images from that site. So I don't have the ISO of whatever build this might be.

maybe it was a Windows Whistler "mock up" From Microsoft.

There's about 95% chance that this is a mockup. Did you people notice that the above mentioned screenshot of the start menu contained no watermark identifying the build number? More mockups and a few screenshots of a real build (2432.main.010202-1757) can be found at http://winsupersite.com/article/windows ... ace-127996

Pretty sure that this is a mockup as the login sports the XP flag which did not get used until 244X iirc, if it turns out to be a real build I bet it is from Lab06(_N) though as they used the name and flag earlier, perhaps this one? Image

Hmm... I've already seen that photo. That's not an official build, nor a mock-up: that's a concept!

Well, here's probably an older version of the login screen.

Whistler 2428 already had the login screen seen in 2446 and later builds (up to 2463). The login sports the XP flag with conjunction with 'Microsoft Codename Whistler'. 2432's desktop may be real, but we don't know much about that login screen. That login screen is actually nicer than RTM. I wished they used that design.

I don't think it's an official Whistler build...but I'm not sure!

I'm with this. I never encountered a welcome screen or start menu like those in any of the builds I looked at in my video series. They do look like mock-ups to me.

I've noticed that the Start menu is featured on this 2001 article about XP's announcement in Seattle in February: http://amo.net/NT/02-15-01WINXP.html

Therefore this confirms that the introductory picture was a mockup. Honestly, it did not look real to me.

It's of course an early Luna concept, and the picture Lukas shown is lowres and the build number is unknown. I think it's 2435. All these builds are 100% unleaked.

If we use logic we can see that both are concepts/mockups...

What they really are is pictures of build 2428 or a mock up of build 2422 which was a mock or never released. What it may be is the taskbar picture when you change from the new start menu to old. :?

after 6 years, i found that the prototype concept mock-up of the logon screen is actually a test Logonui for testing directui. I found it on the leaked XP SP1 source code.

TweakUI has an option to enable or disable the build string. Maybe that's what they did.

Probably a mockup. Because the "Turn off Kitchen Computer" doesn't seem like a thing Microsoft would include in a build.

They actually did... If you change the computer name in System Properties, the power button label on the login screen changes to reflect that.
