[OFFER] 1996-1997 Win95 Packard Bell Master CDs

Post by Gligar13 »

Since I didn't see a thread with these, I decided to post some of my PB master CDs:

Original Model: Platinum Supreme 130
Disc #170584
Early 1996, purple color, 95a:

Original Model: Multimedia C110
Disc #170586
Late 1996, Orange Color, 95a:

Original Model: Platinum Supreme 1850
Disc # 175520-3
Mid-Late 1997 (possibly), Teal color, different disc design, 95b:

The 1997 disc is also unique as it lacks PB Navigator, instead using it's own quick launcher in Windows 95. The file layout is a lot different too.

Someone could probably use these, especially anyone who has a PB still. I also have a Compaq Win98SE quickrestore diskset if anyone wants me to upload that.

Could you also upload the Compaq disk too? It would be very much appreciated.

Hold on all, it's not sure these will be on the FTP in the first place. I am not going to upload every ghosted recovery disc for every brand and model to the FTP, the uniqueness of these are marginal at best, and most of them are just a dump of a pre-installed harddrive or just an OEM serial attached to an OS. The first OEM discs with Win3x might be interesting but beyond that I do not know. I will have to check these and see if there's anything worthwhile in them.

Thanks for the contribution and I bet some members might find them useful, but I will have to see if these end up on the FTP.

Is there Sonic CD on one of the discs? Cause the Early 1996 doesn't have it (from what I've read), and Late 1996 disc is barely readable. The 1997 one doesn't even have that kind of information. I guess I should just install them on a VM to see.

No, none of them had Sonic CD, sadly. Plus, if it did, it would be the Dino2d version, which is unpatchable unlike the later DX version.

Also, apparently they were packaged seperately so you would need a dino2d CD (like most of the other games on the restore CD), and they were sold to OEMS in general, not just PB:
We ended up selling about 5 million copies of the OEM version of the game. Over 3 million of those went to Packard Bell. Another big buyer was Hewlett Packard. And a handful of others. The games was "bundled" with PC's, i.e., came "in the box" with new PC's.

Sega PC group also developed a "retail" version of Sonic CD, later. I think they used DirectX for that. They changed the Help->About dialog box, and took out all the credits for the Intel contributors.

The Dino2D relase, btw, is the one with Sonic spindashing on the disc.

OK, I just hoped to find an original disc image. Well, thanks for these anyway. I'm currently installing to a virtual machine to try.

Gligar13 the 1997 Green (Disc # 175520-3) Diskette link is down, would you please attempt to re-upload to a different download server. And can you make it so it's not on the FTP server, because a lot of us do not have access to it. :$

I am still looking for the OP to possible re-upload 55752003.7z as well as Master CD's 175320 & 175500 but wanted to share some stuff I was able to dig up. After searching deep in the web I finally found an archive of motherboard bios updates. Somewhere around 2001-02 when NEC took over in the US, Packard Bell switched their support site to PriorityOneSupport. Wayback machine archived this site however it requires a login. No way to create an account or authenticate a login these days so I was stuck. I figured out how to do a wildcard search on the wayback machine using http://web.archive.org/*/www.yoursite.com/*

With this I was able to search the url with this link: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www ... downloads/*

I was looking under the PB section but then noticed some familiar board numbers under the NEC/Bios/ section. I cross referenced the numbers with the PB board model #'s listed here: http://www.oocities.org/sjg/mother2.html . Sure enough most matched.

I found my 770mb.exe file and downloaded it. I opened the .exe file in Winrar and inside saw PHLASH.EXE. This was a great sign as my board has a Pheonix BIOS. I then opened PLATFORM.BIN in my HxD hex editor and saw this line: "Packard Bell C1 platform, PHLASH configuration file.............ZQFD2.00.BIOS.ROM". This confirmed that despite being under NEC these were in fact for Packard Bell boards. Probably because NEC bought them by this point. Farther in the file I also saw the line "Intel 28F002BX-T". Going to an old site for my PB770 board: http://www.oocities.org/sjg/pb770.html I confirmed that the BIOS chip on my board was indeed a Intel E28F002BX-T80 2M bit Flash EPROM. I will be trying the flash next weekend :)

Wanted to share the link below for those restoring these old machines for some DOS/Win gaming to save others hours of crawling the web.
