differences between Windows 3.1.x variants

Post by z180 »

I am work slow on a Chicago UI mod on win16 standard mode.
I am using a wfw 3.10 that starts in standard mode.
Early chicago releases developed of top of wfw 3.10,look in the older builds remnants.
The first leaked build is based on WfW 3.11 beta 2 or 3,later builds are using the final codebase.

I am interested in the internal differences of the various but similar looking 3.x releases.

Windows 3.1, codenamed "Janus" (the codename was reused from Windows 3.0), and released in April 1992, was the first release of Windows 3.1x, and it introduced numerous new features, such as TrueType font support, the slightly updated Control Panel (resizable), and even multimedia support, including the two new applets, Media Player and Sound Recorder.

Windows 3.11, released in early 1994, or at least December 31st, 1993 (when it was compiled) was otherwise the same, however, it had certain bug fixes.

Windows for Workgroups 3.1, codenamed "Sparta", and released in October 1992, was based on Windows 3.1, and included more advanced networking features, such as File and Printer sharing, and even Microsoft Mail and Schedule+, as well as Hearts (officially "The Microsoft Hearts Network"), an adaption of the original card game of which was also given networking features, which allowed the user to play a game with other people on a network, however, it was optional, and not actually required for the game itself.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11, codenamed "Snowball", and released in December 1993, was the same as above, however, it included some further updates, as well as the 32-bit File Access feature, of which used some system files from "Chicago", which was in beta testing at the time, and by September 1994 was later given the name Windows 95, rather than the planned name, Windows 4.0.

Don't forget:
Windows 3.2, released only in Simplified Chinese on Chinese Mainland (PRC) market, was released in April 1995. It was based on Windows 3.1 Simplified Chinese and Windows 3.11, with updated GB2312-compliant Chinese Truetype/bitmap fonts and new input methods, and several new display and printer drivers.

I found an update for WfW 3.11 +TCP/IP to fix connections to a NT machine on the 3.51 CDROM

WfW 3.10 has a doesnt need the (on Freedos or FAT32) problematic share.exe
to locking files or multitask opened files.

Nope. Janus was the codename of one of the Windows 3.1 releases.

Early betas would look like Windows 2.1, then in 1989, it would be closer to the final version-
