Microsoft Bob on Windows 7?

Post by gamelover101 »

I've tried playing around with Microsoft Bob on a Windows XP virtual machine, and I kind of liked it, actually. But since I barely have any apps to put MSBOB in good use, I wanted to install it on my Windows 7 host.

The problem is, it doesn't work! I followed the insturctions and the installer rebooted (well, it logged me off for some reason) instead. Now, when I try to open the Bob Home app, it complains that critical components are missing!

It works on Windows XP, but not 7?

That is because Bob was designed for Windows 3.1 & 95. Windows XP was the last version of Windows that was happy with 16-bit applications. Windows 7 & Vista just don't run 16-bit programs very well. Also, Bob was released in 1995 and Windows 7 was released in 2009, a 14 year difference.

Well, is there a way to make it work?

No due to lack of proper 16-bit application support. You may be able to try it in Windows XP Mode. I would try except I use Vista Business, not Windows 7 (Yet).

I installed Microsoft Bob on my Windows 7 machine. It complained about UTOPIA.DLL missing. The solution? Move everything out of C:\MSBOB\HOME and put it in C:\MSBOB. Worked just fine after that.

Since Microsoft Bob is a 16-bit Windows program, it won't run at all for those of you with 64-bit windows.
Goodbye.

Ah, I will try linuxlove's solution. And yes, I have 32 bit Windows.

@compgeke
Lol, why do that when I have a virtual machine?

edit: I forgot to mention I deleted my faulty installation, so I'll have to reinstall it. :(

Or you can download the missing .dll from the internet.

If it did, would I even bother installing BOB?
