Found this on a CD at a cyber-cafe joint my friend works at...I don't know much about it. The protocol version is different than the one in the thread that is locked. See screenshot below, if this is indeed pre-retail and not illegal let me know and I will upload it. Haven't played it yet, will do so after work. Look at the release date and build number in the console screen, they are indeed different than the one in the other thread.

It's probably the public beta. Does it have only one map (de_dust)? If it does, it's the public beta.

and another that said

those numbers mean nothing to me, anyone care to elaborate?

EDIT: CSS Beta 071004 is the one I took and uploaded, I may be able to get the other one.

I called up my buddy he said it's the beta that was given out to cyber-cafes, with some extra maps that were downloaded from servers and such. He told me that CSS was released on a much later date, Oct 21 2004, when this build was released Sep 29 2004. The protocol version on this is v5 when he said that retail has a protocol version of v7. I'll upload later if you guys are sure this is beta.

ALSO: Build is alot smaller than retail.

ALSO: Maps appear unfinished, various obvious lighting/texturing errors.

im pretty sure the beta had beta written in yellow on the main screen.

I don't think Valve would use a unstylish font like that, especially not for a public ( cafe ) beta.

This screen is included in the one I have, but it is inactive and not used. Font may be a little different.

Those numbers are the dates. Month Day Year.

Also, the public beta started before those dates.

Actually, it was the 140804 beta which was given out to cybercafe owners. The 071004 beta was given out also to Counter-Strike: Condition Zero owners.


Actually, these are unofficial ports of the maps from Counter-Strike 1.6, that's why they appear unfinished (they weren't made by Valve).

Do you know where to find them? Especially the 140804, because I'm download a file named "CS_Source_final_full_071004-dma.exe" at 30kb/s from BitTorrent with tracker "http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce". I'm not sure if it's the beta though...

True, the 071004 was released by ( I believe ) Emporio.

i *may* have a beta version somewhere (maybe the .gcf files). I remember downloading a pirated version but then I bought Condition Zero and got it anyway. Most of the maps were made at hl2world.com.
