Have you backed up recently?

I have seen this type of thread on another forum so I thought I'd start one here. Every so often I get a topic reply e-mail with the title "Have you backed up recently?" and it always reminds me to back up data I really don't want to lose. Thats the point of this topic. Subscribe to it (post something on this topic to do this or click the link below) and whenever it is bumped you will receive the reminder. I hope to do this every fortnight or so to remind everyone!

How can I backup?
Backing up can be done in the simplest of ways. Simply copying data to a CD that you don't want to lose, or to another hard disk. This is by far the simplest way to back up data.

You can also turn to commercial backup software such as Norton Ghost which will backup your data automatically, archive it for 'x' number of days, and also just do it incrementally so it saves disk space.


But why should I backup? I've never lost anything before.
Ever heard the saying "there is a first time for everything"? Its true, and it will happen to you one day, and most likely right at the moment that you really don't want it to happen (like a coursework deadline).

Don't tempt fate and backup!


But I don't have the disk space. What am I supposed to do?
There are several ways and types of media to backup your data to:-
- Hard Disk
- USB Stick
- CD/DVD
- External Hard Disk
- Tape drive (expensive!)
- Online storage

I'm sure everyone can utilize at least one of those types of media.


I really don't have the time to backup
What happens if you lose 2 months of work due to a hard disk failure, and you have no other copies of it? Does it really seem like such a time wasting job now?

It takes no more than a few minutes to start a backup running. Do it while you have your dinner or you are going to be out for a few hours and away from the computer.

I am pretty much backing up everything new I create or download essentially every day in preparation for the reinstall that will be pretty soon. (Still using the old HD but have the new one on hand in case something happens)

I have special disk on USB with capacity 700 GB, and I backup on this...

Its been a while since I've backuped (is that a word? ), so I guess 'there's no time like the present'...

I have got 2 external 500 GB HD's with all my files backed up, and i'm already running out of free space.

I don't really back up. I'm really gonna lose all my [censored] soon too...

Same im skint and my Servers are getting full so no backups for me and i don't think 150GB worth of music is going to fit onto a CD

I'm building a 2TB file server with 1TB of removable drives within the next few months specifically for this purpose.

You could just use an old PC with a 500 GB hard drive fitted - they're dirt cheap nowadays.

He's got like 3 old PC's with 500GB already...

But ive just hardly got any room on my servers at home but my server at my dads has sata drives with a back up of my music files (Well old backup)

I barely ever backup. Only when im about to reinstall.

I have a Windows Homer Server setup, that backs up my PCs daily. works great easy recovery too.

I bought 2 Seagate external hard disk after a hard disk crash. And I am happy now.

I don't backup anything, mainly because I don't have the money for big hard drives to keep my 600GB of non-organized data, especially with multiple backups.

Norton 360 "requires" a backup, so yes.

I backed up my hard drive to a 500 GB WD external. One time I had an old IBM thinkpad laptop, and it had some of my old programs on it. One day I needed it, and windows just gave up. Linux saved my @$$.

I have some of my graphic work hosted on imageshack, and the actual data is stored on my 500GB external. I just hope the external HDD doesn't die on me, because I haven't got room on my main 160GB internal to have data on (The reason I bought an external was to let it be games/programs only).

I do weekly backups of pictures and documents to my external hard drive, and try to burn everything to a CD or DVD every 6 months.

I have just started taking backups. All it involves is copying my home folder to my external hard drive each Saturday.

Last time i backed up was when i was installing linux (about 3 months ago). Anyway when i will get the new computer i promise i will back up the important files to my external HDD. (My Documents, My Videos, My Virtual Machines )

I never take a back up. ..although its a good practice to have a backup if you a large amount of HDD and very critical data.. most of times i just take IMP data on DVD ..done and dusted !!

My laptop (everything of any importance is on it) is backed up to my server over the network hourly with time machine. I also copy any files of importance to my laptop (php, mysql databases) which are then backed up to other places. However, I really need to get a 1TB HDD for my server.

I have over 350 gigs of music on an external HDD that I use for my DJ job.I found that if I want to do a backup,all I have to do is go to a friends house and give them all my music files.I currently have over 5 "backups" at friends house in case one person looses it the other person has a backup of everything.
