I wanted to tell you guys that Dosbox is really good for running Windows 3x. It can emulate the SoundBlaster 16 card, the you can download the driver for Windows 3x. Oh, look! Now you have Stereo 16bit good quality sound... Great huh? And usually with an newer computer (new as in less than 9 years old) you can't get a higher color depth and resolution. But with dosbox, when you edit the configuration file, you can get Windows 3x to display at 1024x768x8, here's an example of how to get that working...

Portion of Config File:

[vga]
# svgachipset -- Select one of the following supported SVGA chipsets:
# s3 (default), et4000, et4000new, et3000, pvga1a, or none.
# Full chipset name (like 'Tseng ET4000') will also work
# as long as it contains one of the strings above.
# videoram -- Amount of video memory on emulated SVGA. Not all emulated
# chipsets support this setting.

svgachipset=et4000
videoram=2048

End of Portion...
Just make sure you have et4000 right at svgachipset and a certain amount of VideoRAM. And you can make a directory in your HDD, tell dosbox to mount that directory as C, and install Windows 3x on it. Now you have a Windows 3x Harddrive you can access! You guys should look into Dosbox, maybe install it! :D

perhaps you could make a tutorial, and post it in the tutorials section.

DosBox has always confused me

I would recommend using VMWare, you will find the the installation is painless and the drivers support isn't bad...

I'm not sure about VMware but all hardware in Virtual PC is based on real life hardware so of course it would be easy to find drivers for it.

The exact reason I use DOSBox is because Virtual PC and VMware won't let SVGA work for Windows 3x. Or Soundblaster 16. And they won't let me get direct access to the HDD.

Using software such as WinImage will let you edit files in the hard disk images.

I wouldn't say that it's easy to find drivers for VirtualPC, but possible. I have SB16 working fine in WfW 3.11 in VirtualPC 2007 SP1. I just downloaded the drivers right from Creative's website. Those were the easy ones. As for the Ethernet drivers, they're on Intel's website but it's difficult to figure out which ones you need because DEC makes the chip... but Intel has the drivers.

Pre-Windows 95 it would be difficult but all versions of Windows after 95 have the drivers for the Virtual PC hardware built-in to the software. Except with the Windows NT 4.0 the sound drivers aren't installed by default, however they are on the NT CD.

Look, I love Virtual PC for Windows OSes like Whistler and such, but DOS... I'm not saying you guys should quit using VPC and VMW, I'm just saying for WFW 3.11 and DOS, I like DOSBox. Umm... Yeah, you can get that stuff working with Virtual PC, but it's still a pain in the butt, for me at least.

Oh, and I've posted two tutorials, they're both in order, the first one: DOSBox: Special Tutorial for DOSBox Daum Cafe SVGA and Others. That tutorial is about configuring DOSBox to be Awesome with SVGA and Soundblaster 16. The Second One: Windows 3x SVGA and SB16 Tutorial DOSBox. The second one is about getting Windows 3x to take advantage of the fact that DOSBox supports SVGA and SB16. One note though: You have to do the first one before you do the second one.
