I have 15 cds left to transfer to my external HD and move them all over to DVD based backup, it does take a while, but I want everything transferred over, however I remove the older stuff that I don't need anymore, so far the external has about 10 GB used up on it.
I found that restoring a OS to a different PC doesn't work too good tho.. maybe a different hardware issue?
Yes, Windows contains hardware information in its installation and you can't boot an installation done on one PC on a different PC (unless you remove this information using Sysprep first).
By the way, I don't think I would trust WHS for backup, though it should be OK if you just back up to it and don't edit the files that are stored on the server (or if you only have one hard disk in the server) - there is a bug in it that can result in corruption if you use the feature where several drives appear as one large one and you edit the files that are stored there.

Theoretically, it is possible to boot an XP/Vista install on a different PC than the one it was initially installed on if the OS has a driver for the mass storage controller. The Sysprep approach ensures you have a "clean" system, however it should work anyway. I once did this with an XP install – booted without a hitch on the new system, did the "New Hardware found" thing a few dozen times, rebooted a couple of times and ran fine afterwards. However, my conscience requires me to do a clean install on a new machine anyway to have a fresh copy.
Well my last backup (Creating an image of the system, not copying data) was when I finished installing my Windows.
I create images of my system drive D: only.
C: has the same content on every of our 5 computers (just DOS from Windows 98 and DOS utilities, Drive Image 2002 for backups, and NT4 and XP boot sector)
My data on G:\ will be saved to the other hard disk, the USB external hard drive or the second PC running on Longhorn 4074
Well I recently had a data loss, but I was able to restore 100% of my data.
I keep an automated backup system on my server. It backs up my clients once a week, and also keeps incremental backups. So I can restore any changes to my machines made in the last three months. Fortunately I never had to use a restore yet, but it's working (I test it once every few months). All my documents etc on each machine is also automatically redirected to my server, so nothing is stored on the machines except OS and apps....
If any of the workstations crash then I'll just reboot into PXE boot, restore a basic configuration of the workstation and login... and I get access to all my stuff again. I may have to reinstall a few applications, but I don't keep many apps that needs reinstalling. Most of then are "thinstalled", meaning that I don't have to reinstall them, just run them directly. And those apps are installed on the workstation by policy rules on the server. On the first login everything needed is installed.
So I think I am pretty well setup when it comes to backups .
