Try to load the executable from the Terminal directly:

1. Open Terminal.
2. Go to Applications.
3. View Package Contents of the Yahoo Messenger.
4. Go to MacOS folder.
5. There should be a binary file, drag it to the Terminal.
6. Press Enter.

If you look on the site, it says "System Requirement: Mac OS X 10.4 - 10.8"

10.3 is definitely not 10.4.

That Mac can run Tiger, though, if you can find 1gb RAM then it'll run well. If you cannot stand Mac OS 10.4 due to slowness (I personally don't find it that slow and I own three with Tiger), then you will have to an old version of Adium that will work on 10.3.9.

Adium for 10.3.9: http://mac.oldapps.com/adium.php?old_adium=12

Adium will be your best choice because it will work with all other chat clients and didn't drop support for 10.3.9 too long ago. Its been about 4 - 5 years since Yahoo dropped support for 10.3.9.

I guess Apple did something right...

I will ALWAYS need an optical drive.

512MB should be enough to run Tiger nicely.
