...I've been here for quite a while now, and if you check the early posts in this forum, you will see occasional references to what was apparently an archive of Chicago Build 34, only it was largely corrupted.

However, I'm wondering if anyone still has this archive, or might know where to locate it, because I would still like to see if it can be fixed, even if others might not think so. Of course, it's possible that it was just a mistyping of another build, but I would still like to have it anyway if anyone still has it in their collection.

But if you check at least one (if not more than one) of Antz's posts, you will already see references to this apparent archive of Build 34.

It looks legit, but according to The Distractor, early Chicago builds like this didn't have the Network Control Panel. Do control panels get carried over in these early builds when upgrading from Windows 3.1?

We should definitely ask him, and this is coming from someone who has been searching for these early builds for more than five years now.

Also, if you look at the January 1993 usability testing screenshot, you will see that there was indeed a Network icon, both on the desktop, and also within the File Cabinet.

Well, many people have been searching for a legitimate copy of the pre-alpha Chicago builds for years now, and I think that it would be a great gift to everyone here at BetaArchive to finally have this build. If it was me, I would be very greatful to the person, and I wouldn't say anything to him like "LOL!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S SO COOL!!!!!!!!! LEAK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", rather, I would keep it in a mature and respectful tone.

This build seems otherwise exactly the same as the one where several remaining files in Build 56 come from (most notably OLDSETUP.INF), with exception to the fact that rather than only Dr. Watson running in the background, only Tracker is running in the background, as well as the presence of the Advanced System control panel in Controls.sys. It would seem to me as if this was the standard ("Retail") release, whereas OLDSETUP.INF came from an SDK/DDK release.

A few minutes after that video was uploaded, I found the video, and decided it seems real, mainly because of a reason which I shall not mention here. According to the video tags, build 34 is from April 1993, and therefore *after* Chicago milestone 3 (where network support was not implemented) so it is possible that network support had been implemented by build 34 already.

Also please note I already sent a PM to George Wolfowitz on YouTube, asking him in a more formal way to leak (the wording I used was "Would it be possible for you to upload an ISO of the build to somewhere like mediafire?").

That's fine, but the chances he'll agree to leak it are small. :/ Oh well, you never know, maybe he will...

I hope it's the real one and not a fake like the circulated leak of 40.

Like I said, it seems real, and now it looks more convincing.

• The monochrome icon of 58s System Properties matches that of the Control Panel of Windows 3.x, proving the 16-bit colour version was that too at one time (just like in that video of build 34)
• The grey File Cabinet icon from this build is present in build 58s, in Window Metrics in Control Panel.

Still nothing. This is his build, according to the Owner info in System CPL, says George; Crystal Data.

No, actually, Chicago Build 34 (at least in the default setup) had a boot screen similar to Windows 3.1x. Infact, if you look in Build 56 or Build 58s, you'll find that one of the remaining Chicago pre-alpha files, SYSLOGO.RLE (formerly VGALOGO.RLE before being renamed), is basically a modified version of the Windows 3.1 boot screen, with the coloring changed, the "Jaguar Genuine Parts" logo in the background (apparently an inside reference to the new MS-DOS, codenamed "Jaguar"), and the "Version 3.1" being replaced with "Chicago", in blue bold faced italics.

I'm not sure though if the early Chicago builds also had a special MS-DOS made for them that might have put the new boot screen in place, that's still to confirm, but the early builds (or most, anyway) definitely did not have it included by default, even if it did technically exist in this early stage.

Builds don't leak just because people want them to leak. Or at least, not very often.

The uploader hasn't even logged back into his YouTube account yet, so I think we should wait a bit longer.

Maybe he doesn't know that is a beta.

As someone sometime ago already suggested, this account seems to be made solely for teasing purposes and then abandoned...

And as I said, we really need to wait longer before we can really judge in that regard.

I actually have read some old posts on OSBetaArchive/Classic Beta Archives about Chicago Build 58s being released; it was released by someone known as Charad@ (I hope I spelled his user name correctly). He first made a post about Chicago Build 58s in around June, and although a lot of people were at first very excited, some people started saying things like "Where is Charad@?" and stuff like that, to the point where some of them (if I remember correctly) even doubted his legitimacy (note that I am not speaking of any build's legitimacy on my part, in case some people feel that I am breaking the rules by doing so here). As far as they were concerned, he was completely gone - he didn't even log in for the longest time.

But guess what? In September, he logged back in, only to release his copy of Chicago Build 58s, and everyone was extremely excited, including ReflectiaX, because, well, back then, it wasn't pre-5x series builds that were all the rage, it was pre-73g builds that people were searching for in basically the same way.

It was very well received. Of course, our copy of Chicago Build 58s is a more complete and completely unmodified copy that was released here several years ago, but still, it just shows how much can be received in return by waiting (not to mention that this also proves The Distractor's point on eBay, that we should be patient if we want to receive something like this in return).

So, all in all, we have no idea what this George Wolfowitz person is going to do with this build until we wait a bit longer.

Funnily enough, I actually read that same thread (in the OSBA database dump) that WinPC referenced, and I have a copy of that original leak of 58s (that I got from an FTP server on OSBA back in 2004 or 2005), and it was even described to have come from a warez BBS in the thread. (however some files were missing, because of CRC errors, etc)
