Using existing system as a base isn't just a custom OS, it's a modification of existing, there's still piece of work you haven't done on it and needs to be mentioned in credits.
And of course, it's less fun than writing everything from scratch.
A lot more work though, especially when the language that you know is JIT Interpreted (Java). I should really learn C... But I'll show off my custom OS later. Reason I call it a custom OS and not just a window manager is that it doesn't run the normal programs, it runs it's own programs coded specifically for my operating system (and yes, I'm implementing a way to actually install new programs not written by me). Those programs run the same inside the operating system with any host system.
