It depends. Which one of me are we talking about?

Quote:
Get your reading glasses, just not your Aero Glasses. Microsoft has released an 11,000+ word blog post that covers just about every nook, cranny, and design decision behind the Windows user interface since its inception. That's right – even good ol' Windows 1 makes an appearance, which has us wondering just how Microsoft managed to take a good screenshot of that legacy OS, let alone install it.
More than just a history lesson, however, Microsoft's blog posts gives a bit of news about the design decisions that are changing up Windows 8 in new and mildly controversial ways.
Here's the big reveal: Aero Glass is no more.
Take a moment if you need it — some do. "Start menu and Aero Glass must be reinserted, absolutely, no discussion allowed," replied one commenter to Microsoft's post.
"Seriously? Now you removed Aero Glass from the windows? How exactly do you expect to market this to the customer," said another.
Microsoft's reasoning for eliminating the visual accoutrements — "flattening surfaces, removing reflections, and scaling back distracting gradients," writes Jensen Harris, director of program management for Windows' user experience team — is that it frees Windows 8 of unnecessary clutter and distraction thanks to a more "clean and crisp" user interface.
"Gone are the glass and reflections. We squared off the edges of windows and the taskbar. We removed all the glows and gradients found on buttons within the chrome. We made the appearance of windows crisper by removing unnecessary shadows and transparency. The default window chrome is white, creating an airy and premium look. The taskbar continues to blend into the desktop wallpaper, but appears less complicated overall," Harris writes.
"To complete the story, we updated the appearance of most common controls, such as buttons, check boxes, sliders, and the Ribbon. We squared off the rounded edges, cleaned away gradients, and flattened the control backgrounds to align with our chrome changes. We also tweaked the colors to make them feel more modern and neutral."
And here's the final result, which you'll only be able to experience come the final release version of Windows 8 (sorry, Consumer Preview users):
Image

Paul Thurrott, of the Supersite for Windows, has a different take on Microsoft's changes: It's all about battery life. Specifically, the Windows Metro UI is designed to function more akin to a tablet. One app, one screen (or two apps on one screen, if you use Windows 8's "Snap" feature), with Windows managing application lifecycles to ensure that resources and battery life aren't needlessly spent on background programs.
Aero Glass, he opines, runs contrary to Microsoft's goals with Metro.
"Rest in peace, Aero. I liked you, a lot. Still do. And I'll miss you," Thurrott writes. "I'm curious why Windows 8 can't simply include Aero themes in addition to something flatter and duller, especially for those desktop PC-using power users who will primarily use the desktop environment and not care about (let alone need) better battery life."

Microsoft is self-destructing with Windows 8.

Looks better in my opinion, though a tad bright.

Isn't this what the "classic" theme is for?

First, they got rid of the start button, now Aero? They're doing this all too quickly.
I am not using Windows 8, and if they continue it with the new operating systems, I'll still be using Windows 7 in 30 years.

I actually like this quite a bit. Granted, I liked the Win8 Aero (I'm using it on my main Win7 desktop), but this seems to integrate the desktop and Start Menu styles more fluidly. And frankly, fewer shiny distractions are always a good thing for distractible people like me.

Looks pretty ugly. Also not digging that the taskbar is still glass and doesn't match the Window chrome.

When I got the Lumina 800 Windows Phone for the first time, I realised it didn't have mass storage mode, bluetooth support (except for audio), proper synchronisation with PC, microSD... I had completely expected those features, and thought that they just weren't included in any descriptions since practically every phone these days has these functions. So now I find out that Windows 8 won't have DVD support, Aero, Media Centre, start button... In my opinion Microsoft should focus on PCs rather than tablets.

Although there are things that Windows 8 will have that Windows 7 doesn't, although I don't like some of them, eg. Live Account integration.

For some reason I quite like the white look, but like others have said it seems unfair and quite bizarre if Aero has been thrown out completely...

Unless I remember wrong, it's already gone completely in the released Server 8 Preview... and it's horrendously ugly, over-bright and almost bleached out looking.
Bad, bad move.

EDIT: Yup, it is. So for those who want to experience the future of flat, painfully bright desktops with no option to go back - Server 8 Developer Preview has you covered.

What's the point on removing Aero? I really don't get it. It's the same with removing the start button! Why?

They are trying to make Windows 8 a "revolution" (which may or may not work).

When Windows 8 comes out, i'll be using Windows 7. When Windows 9 comes out, i'll be using Linux or OS X.

The only thing I hope is that the actual code for rendering glass is not removed. Then I'll just download a custom theme.

I like this a bit but if you look some screenshots around the web flat aero looks better in my opinion

I did my fair share of complaining about aero in 2007 when Vista arrived as being a pointless feature. But at that time there were WDDM driver issues and many lower end integrated graphics cards just couldn't handle aero. Fast forward to 2012 and even low end netbooks and integrated graphics cards can run aero smoothly. So why do away with a feature that technology has finally caught up with? Why not just disable aero when on battery, I'm pretty sure this can be configured under Windows 7.

I'm seeing less and less reasons to upgrade to Windows 8. The upgrade from XP to Vista/7 gave you aero, a decent 64 bit edition, better hardware support to name a few. For the upgrade from 7 to 8 I'm seeing more disadvantages than advantages.

You'll have to forgive me but I don't find theming to be a critical feature. I'm personally with Paul Thurrott on this one, Aero takes up resources and battery life, and Microsoft wants to nab that (again imho) in the butt, besides, they can use that as a selling point that it is resource light and light on battery power consumption.

This. Though I think Aero was gorgeous in Vista, I do agree that you *can* make a visually pleasing OS without relying on flashy-flash graphical nonsense like that.

At first (after seeing the early builds), I thought Windows 8 would be a decent upgrade. I now changed my mind. They should remove aero for tablets, but keep it on the desktops or not remove it at all. Batery life is, frankly, a poor argument. If you know how to keep your dekstop/laptop/tablet in shape, you know how to keep your batery's life as long as possible.

SUM: It has proven several times in Microsoft's history that a lot of big changes in one release is a reciepe for disaster. They're doing it again.

Aye, my tablet last for days on average. Is Microsoft forgetting that they're making software for desktops too?

Reminds me of Windows 95, in fact. Big GUI updates, but surprisingly worked. :3

If you don't like it, just wait 'till the style builders get to work.

In reality, pretty much everyone on this board except for me, evangelikevin, Tandyman100 and hounsell all hate Windows 8 so everyone is looking for any reason to hate Windows 8.
