Recently my roomate set up Ubuntu 12 on his laptop. After installing Cario Dock, it performs almost like an Apple laptop, even if he doesn't have drivers for NV Optimus (the OS keeps using the integrated graphics card). Apparently, with countless GNU applications, Ubuntu, or Debian, or other Linux have much more resources than Mac, and with the help of WINE ("Wine Is Not an Emulator") they can surprisingly run most Win32 programs. So why can so many Apple fans still be intoxicated by Mac OS?

If you get some other stuff too, you can make it Mac OS X Snow Leopard look-alike. I had done it on my netbook back in the Ubuntu 9.04 days. It was much more difficult back then.

I think these types of simple tutorials are increasing? I don't get what the point of them is, I mean the tutorials have existed on dedicated sites for years, why put it on this site? And in my opinion this would not belong in the Apple OS section...

I've used Cairo-Doc for ages, with Compiz effects its pretty good. Although if you want Mac-OS like Ubuntu, there are ways to do that-to make Ubuntu look exactly like Mac, did that once with one of the older Ubuntus (maybe 8 or 9), although got bored with it pretty quick, Mac isn't the best look out there.

Does my post seem like a simple turorial? I didn't include any instructions in it! I searched betaarchive before posting, and found no topic directly related to Cairo Dock. I'm just impressed by the powerful programs of Ubuntu (and such a good performance even without stand-alone graphics card), and I post here in order to show Apple fans a good alternative of their operating system.

Apps still crash occasionally on Ubuntu. It's still not proprietary (not like I wanted it to be so, though), still doesn't feel heavy (visual effects).

For example, let's look at your minimize screenshot:

Zoomed-in (result – PIXELATED):

Now let's look at my Mountain Lion install.

Zoomed-in (result – much less pixelated):

There are also many reasons, but this was just an example. Also, I don't think a "skin" for something would be better than original. Look at all the Vista Transformation packs for XP.

Two notes: First, WINE is available for MAC as well if I recall correctly (as is Boot Camp, which Ubuntu DOESN'T have). Second, people like Mac because it's stable and simple and easy to use. Ubuntu (with or without the Mac OS skin, which is a pretty pointless graphical change), despite being a desktop/home user OS, is not as stable or easy to use.

This thread needs to be binned. Ubuntu with an Apple skin does not make it "OS X -like" and yes, WINE is available on OS X also. So in comparison with the OP; OS X + WINE > UBUNTU + WINE. At first glance, I was not convinced that the screenshots in the OP looked anything resembling OS X. For starters; the dock is all fugly and just wrong looking.

Seconded. This topic is pointless and has no value. I can paint flames on a toaster, but that don't make it a hot rod.

Nope but it makes the toaster look damn cool! :) Not the same case with this however. People who make Apple lookalikes are usually too poor to actually save up and buy a Mac and so they create spin offs to satisfy their own tastes. Imho this looks nothing like OSX, it is in fact horrible.
tl;dr, pointless topic is pointless.

People need to take into consideration the price of a Mac. My aunt is thinking on buying a MacBook with my help, I don't know how the hell she'd get the money for it. I'd rather break Apple's EULA that is read by no-one (And is usually replaced by notes from the OS disc's vendor if it's a Hackintosh distro like iATKOS) and put OS X on my PC. Sure, more work, but I have better access to my PC and I get a nice OS. In fact, if I wasn't into computers to the point where I can safely learn how to install OS X on a PC, I would at least make my Windows/Linux PC look like Mac (like OP has done).

Just chill, Apple fanboys. ;)
