Dang, that's terrible. Very sad. I guess there's just no way we will ever see any of those "meticulously hand crafted" levels. I am sure that today's consoles and computers could easily handle that kind of data. Too bad the original Xbox was a fairly limited platform (then again, so was everything else we had at that time). Sad stuff indeed.

They did create the demo, and it was playable, but it was subsequently scrapped. This means it still technically exists.

the beta has better graphics than the xbox could handle and the AI is heavily scripted. they probably only made this demo for the e3 because if they would have released it like this the game wouldn't be playable

Wasn't halo 2 also running on a different engine at one point?
Doubtful. Bungie has developed the Halo engine much like Microsoft developed NT -- Blam!, the engine, was improved over and over again for each game - the limitations of the hardware was the determining factor for removing a lot of graphical effects - mainly due to the dev hardware having 128mb ram, and the end-user hardware having only half that.

I remember a picture and a article of pre-retail halo 2. The picture is some grunts in a gray corridor and I think they are exploding from a grenade the player threw. I'm almost positive that article talked about the new engine in the screenshot.
If anyone would like the Halo 2 multiplayer beta with the cracked xbe to play offline I could upload that. For those that are still interested in Halo 2 betas

Yeah i would like the acess to that, Does it play without being patched?
Does any have the xbe that allows system link play? By unlocking that you can use a tunneling program to play with multiple people, it exists because it can be seen in this video here
