Quake 1

*Qtest (or Qtest1)
*Quake 0.8 (called Beta3 in the readme. Probably a leftover from a previous version for Q&A)
*Quake Press Release (almost exactly the same as 0.8)

Quake 2

*Q2Test (basically an early version of the final demo with a HUD face)

Quake 3

*IHV (Individual Hardware Vendor) Test (multiple addons were made by various users at the time, like renaming the levels and hacking tim_dm1 to have different weapons. Not sure if an untouched version of it exists, because all of the ones I've found have been altered in some way, even if it's something as simple as changing the controls .cfg)
*Q3Test Mac versions
*Q3TEST Dedicated Server for Windows (released a few days before 1.03 was)
*Q3Test 1.03 (Doesn't work on modern OSes for some reason)
*Q3Test 1.04 (Doesn't work on modern OSes)
*Q3Test 1.05 (Doesn't work on modern OSes)
*Q3Test 1.06 (finally starts working)
*Q3Test 1.07
*Q3Test 1.08
*Q3Test 1.09

Quake 4

*Quake 4 Beta Demo (IIRC the same as the normal demo)

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

*Public Beta

If there are any other Quake betas/prototypes out there, let me know.

MISC

*Quake 1, 2, 2 PSX and 3 pre-release screenshot archive, courtesy of T02my.

Well, Quake 1 have a one more build. It's "Press-release" build of Quake 1 for press those times, nothing much differents from inside beta 0.8, only console background changed.

All Q3 tests work for me. And I do not know, is it official IHV Test for Windows was, because I have a port from MAC presentation.

Also uploaded to ftp the 0.91 and a patch to make it 0.92. Not sure which version is that, even asked it, but no one replied.

Yep. The levels have been renamed to tim(insert number here), which is a big sign that it's been modified. Strangly, the Flamethrower and Grapple Hook still have their original skins, while other modified versions of IHV don't.

I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit, and the ones I listed aren't working for me. I've tried every compatibility option that Vista has, but they still don't work. I read they don't work on XP either. What OS are you running?

I believe everything before Quake was officially released wouldn't run on Windows (which is why WinQuake was created). I've been playing Quake betas in DOSBox just fine

I'm talking about Q3Test, not Quake 1. :O

A lot of the textures for things like the Quad damage icon have also been replaced. I'd upload the untouched version but sadly I can't find it anymore *hehe*

i Remember that i had the quake 3 IHV alpha, it contained a chainsaw that the viewmodel was only visible when attacking and lacked textures, most guns had lower quality textures and some used quake 2 guns sounds.

The character used was sarge.

I'm looking for these two files:
GLQuakeV0_3.tar.Z
GLQuakeV0_3src.tar.Z
These were very early SGI Quake versions - they were available at Ed Hutchins's page at SGI, it seems they were also mirrored, but I can't find an FTP server with them. At some point Carmack worked with Hutchins on these version (and probably also GLQuake).

Sure, but I wouldn't count on getting it anytime soon.

found these old glquakes for sgi on their ftp:

ftp://ftp.sgi.com/sgi/quake/index.html

not sure if they are interesting, but who knows, some packs have files dated back to 1997 febr, and all was released by Ed Hutchin...

Yes, this is the site I linked to in one of my previous posts viewtopic.php?p=269460#p269460
These are the more "final" SGI versions. The V0.3 was released in 1996: GLQuake v0.3 available
And the V0.3 sources - "Quake walkthrough in OpenGL" - would also be interesting.

Hmm maybe one of Ed's old emails is still active, and we could ask him to upload them again :)

For those interested in some bits of Quake history (in Polish, so use Google translate): the most important Polish Quake-page from that time (yes, this is how the Web looked back in 96'). Most of it does not matter, but there are some interesting facts:
* letter from Dave Taylor after he left id - they already had a version of GLQuake on SGI before November 1996.
* letter from John Carmack
* If anyone missed it - an AIX version of Quake (for the RS/6000).

So, to sum up:
* 24 Oct 1996 - Ed Hutchins did GLQuake v0.3 (message on comp.sys.sgi.announce).
* 28 Oct 1996 - before this date JC did already some testing with Quake and OpenGL on IRIX (letter from Dave Taylor).
* 30 Oct 1996 - still no GLQuake on NT and an unofficial offer for SGI (letter from John Carmack).
* 4 Nov 1996 - Ed Hutchins mailed YoonioR (the author of this Polish Quake website), that he will probably work with John Carmack on an SGI port.
* 6 Nov 1996 - JC did GLQuake on NT (JC's .plan).
* 23 Nov 1996 - John Carmack and Ed Hutchins join forces to do SGIQuake (JC's .plan).
* 22 Jan 1997 - the first version of GLQuake is made available on id's FTP (JC's .plan).

Now the question is - how Ed Hutchins did the port *before* working with John Carmack? I know about the leaked Quake 1.01 code, but it would be odd to make the GLQuake v0.3 code available at an corporate website, if it would be based on leaked sources.

It was written off specifications.
Edward Hutchins wrote:
GLQuake has the majority of rendering code and the QuakeC interpreter needed for getting a full Quake server running, but someone out there will have to work on replicating Quake's main world-simulation loop. Writing a client-side quake terminal should be possible since most of the client-server protocol has been documented in the Quake specs.

Hi all,

There was an unofficial port of Quake 1 to Mac OS long before the official retail version. Any of you heard about this? Supposedly someone had stolen the DOS source code from the servers of the company CrackDotCom, and ported it to Mac. This was how everyone on Mac played Quake 1 at first. It was distributed very heavily over the server/client BBS-style software "Hotline". This version of Quake 1 was usually referred to as "HackQuake". I can probably dig up a copy of the application. It's a pretty rough port. Very laggy and has some occasional crashes. The particle effects from grenades & rockets caused substantial lag. Still, when this was the only way to play Quake, it was good enough for the time being. Especially since it was playable over the net, and against DOS/Win players as well of course.
