Box says Redhat Linux 7, and while the box has a few tears and dents in it, coupled with the shrink wrap that's been ripped up, I could not resist this. I got it simply because it was a Redhat product.
Thoughts on this or anything, guys?

I've only found a RHEL 9 demo disk . I've never played with Redhat before, as I also got Solaris 10 11/06 release and I spent hours trying to get that installed on anything with no success, not even Virtual Box.
I had found that at a book sale, along with SuSE Professional 8 and 9...must've been a linux person donating stuff.

I don't know. I'm not sure if I'm going to even open the CD case, because it's still sealed.

Lol, I thought this was a pretty good find. Got it for only 5 bucks.
The shrink wrap was ripped enough so that it exposed the top, allowing me to open the box and take everything out. I find this very interesting. It has all the manuals, the Red Hat stickers, the still sealed case containing the CDs, and a little bookmark-type thing with some useful Linux commands on it. I didn't expect this at all.

I was going to ask if you paid $60...
Screw that.
I'd like to know how much this thing originally was, but I can't find much info on it. I've looked on eBay, I've looked on Amazon, and have been Googling for the past 30 - 45 minutes trying to figure this out. Hell, it's almost as if ANY information on this version doesn't even exist.

I was talking about... why is there a "60 value" on it, when linux is free anyways??

The 49$ / y subscription (as I see on RedHat's site) actually includes support, and, you know, basically in RedHat all you pay for is the support service. It's sad to see again the same story, "it would go past Win 7 price", "who'd pay for linux?", etc... I know you won't use it as your home desktop, but this is, even in the desktop flavour, intended for businesses. And for businesses, provided they don't heavily rely on some Windows application, this is a good option. After all, I can see businesses are happy to pay for RedHat on their servers (with subscriptions that are way more expensive).
$49USD PER YEAR! And thats the cheapest option (ie. desktop edition without support). Witin 3 years it would go past Windows 7 Pro's price!
Still cheaper than using Windows Support. $60 per question is what they told me it'd cost when I called last September. I hung up.
PS: This can't be RHEL 7, because according to Red Hat's site the latest release is 6.1. Either you got a misprinted box, or a beta copy, or it's a fake.

It is "Red Hat Linux 7" not "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7."
Before the existence of the Fedora Project, Red Hat produced its own free Desktop Linux. You could purchase pay-for boxed copies, similar to OpenSUSE now. It continued up to version 9, and then was discontinued and became Fedora Core.

Thanks for reminding me. I'd forgotten that, actually. The first Linux version I ever used was Fedora Core 3.

Here's what the CDs will look like. There should also be a single floppy to help boot from CD, even though the first CD is bootable.

Hmm, I thought it said "Self-support Subscription (1 year) (Only available in self support)", https://access.redhat.com/support/offerings/production/sla.html says that "self support" has no support, only "standard" and "premium" do. But maybe I'm wrong.

I've included in "support" meaning repository access and security updates too. If you mean "support" as "technical help" you're right.

Microsoft gives free updates too, via Windows updates, completely for free for the lifetime of the OS, (from what I know they still provide free security updates for XP, or at least did until recently). So then really the $49USD is quite high for what you're getting.

Maybe an upload of the discs could be in order? I would take a look at those discs for hidden files.
Would it be considered abandonware? Redhat might be interesting to test out, never used it before.

Also, CentOS project offers a RedHat-based complete distribution for free, providing updates too. So maybe the price is too high, but if you're a business and trust RedHat more, then you may want to pay for "better" service. I must admit full support subscriptions make more sense in that context.
Anyway, I think it should be considered abandonware for sure. RedHat 7 is now almost 12 years old (released 9/2000) and it has reached its end of support of course. It's also quite interesting for someone who likes Linux and Unix, RedHat is a piece of history.

Programmers get paid 30 USD an hour. If this thing saved somebody over 2 hours (maybe something works off the bat?) then it worth the 60 USD price tag. I bet it was sold for twice as much to enterprise customers!
