I got a VirtualPC 7.0 Machine running Windows Memphis Build 1387.
But, when it loads (The windows 95 logo screen) it stop, gives a black screen with the text:

"While initializing device TKERN:
Windows Protection error. You need to restart your computer."

I tried to change the Ram from 64 to 32 then to 16, but no luck. Adding more doesnt change anything either.
Its running with DOS 5.00.

Anybody got an idea on how to fix this, cause its not an ram error. (Cause my Windows Chicago runs fine with 64 ram or lower)

use VMware for it in 5.x mode, but remember to remove the floppy controller for it after setup has completed (HSFLOP.PDR)

still, tried VMware in 5.x mode? It does not give any Protection-related errors.

This is most likely related to processor speed. A similar error occurs on Windows 95 OSR 2.x if one does not use the last version of NTKERN.VXD (4.03.1213) that was contained in AMDK6UPD.EXE.
(See the "KNOWN ISSUES" Section of the FIX95CPU ReadMe, linked in my signature.)

Also affects the Windows Nashville Beta. See here.
http://www.computing.net/answers/window ... 70950.html

As for fixing this on Memphis, my suggestion would be to try using later versions of NTKERN.VXD from later Memphis builds or from 98 RTM.

I haven't looked into this issue deeper, but hopefully I can find the time eventually.

Ok, ill try that.
But how is it possible to put files into a virual machine?
I only got a .vmh file (.vmc too, but thats not the harddisk)

I'll try that if there is no other solution left.

Thanks for the help anyways!

Does your VM software give you the option to map your virtual hard disks to your real machine, like a network drive? I use VMware, which has this option. I have used VirtualPC before, but it was a much older version than you have and I don't remember much about it...

If you can map the virtual drive to your main system, you can copy the later versions of NTKERN to
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\ and then disconnect the mapped drive and try booting the VM again. It's a trial-and-error process... :|

You can use WinImage to add files to a .VHD.

It has no mapping option, but i'll try WinImage.

So, i only have to take another NTKERN from Windows 98?

You can try the one from Windows 98 RTM (4.10.1998). However, I would not count on that version working because there are significant code changes between the 1387 and 1998 builds. I would try downloading some of the 14xx and 15xx builds and using NTKERN from those...
