Hi,
recently, I acquired ISO images of MacOS X Server 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 (not v3). I also own a Mac, that would be the perfect (compatible) target for it. However, I've got some trouble burning bootable CDs from them (Using MacOS X). At first, I tried with the disk utility and burned 1.2 to a DVD, which was read by the target Mac, however the installation would fail as soon as it tries to reboot from the DVD. I hear the Mac accessing the DVD for a moment, before it shows the folder with the question mark. Later, I learned from this that the 1.2 (not v3) is not bootable - strange, since it had a system folder on it, but ok. After this, I tried to burn 1.1 to a DVD using Disk Utility - same results. Today, I tried my luck with CDs and Toast Titanium 11. I burned 1.2 and 1.0. Same results. The CD is not bootable.
I think, I remember two things from the old pre-MacOS X days: You had to enable some option in Toast to mark a track bootable for MacOS (which I can't find for the life of me in Toast 11) and somehow that ISO images were kinda "difficult" for bootable pre-MacOS X tracks with old Macs.

Try using something on Windows like the Windows ISO Burner or Deepburner, I can verify that Deepburner works as I used that on Windows 2000 to burn a 1.2v3 CD.

Ugh... Windows. I have to try this at work. I've got no 'real' (i.e. not virtualized/emulated) Windows at home. Is the free/portable version sufficient, or do I have to use the pro-trial of Deepburner?
Anyways... strange, that it doesn't work on MacOS X using Toast or Disk Utility. I remembered Toast as being pretty reliable.

The iBook is probably your problem. OS X 1.x is VERY picky as to the hardware. The only real supported machines are the Power Mac G3s and early Powermac G4s and a couple eMacs. An install might be possible on an iBook, but the iBook is going to need to have an Apple OEM CD-ROM drive, no DVD-ROM, and is probably going to lack a LOT of drivers for display, audio, etc.

Oh, sorry... I was not aware that this was the page of RacerX.
But I was aware, that he had used a Clamshell and mine was not a Clamshell. Since mine is just one generation later and also able to boot MacOS 9 without any trouble, I thought I'd give it a try.

I can't even get it to install on My BW G3… It fails to find the root device… Why? The stupid CD-R burner that the previous owner installed… Not compatible with Mac OS X Server…

I'm perfectly fine if someone tells me, that MacOS X Server 1.x itself won't run on this iBook. Until then I'll wonder why even the MacOS 9 part refuses to boot. (MacOS 9 does obviously run on this iBook) I want Kernel panics of MacOS X Server or something like that to stop me. Until then... I'll try.
Has anyone ever tried to _install_ that in an emulator?

I did try in Sheep Shaver before, and it doesn't do much but crash it. I would try with PearPC except it is unable to run OS 9, which the installer is based off of.
I have a Clamshell iBook I can attempt an install of 1.2v3 on sometime later, I just need to swap the hard drive and that sounds like a LOT of fun...not really.

SheepShaver will NOT work. Period. For the same reasons it doesn't emulate 9.1+.
PearPC is outdated… I think…

Thanks for clearing that up. I did not spend much time with either SheepShaver or PearPC, because I always had the neccessary hardware to run my MacOS related stuff.
Well, always until this time, it seems. Still no luck with installing it.

Haha, not a problem for me to get it installed, I've been trying to track down a cheap Powermac G3 for a while that is local and less than $80, as I don't want an expensive 1999 system.
I have a feeling I will have better luck trying to install on my G3 upgraded PowerComputing Macintosh Clone.

You seem to be overlooking the fact that even though the iBook can boot from Mac OS 9, using a CD from a different OS version will not work for that. Apple created CDs and DVDs for their Mac OS X systems that are specific to each particular generation of machines; so they all have specific drivers that are only compatible with those systems, as well as a pre-install script that checks hardware to be sure it meets the requirements.
Mac OS 9 is the same for some systems: Apple only made those systems bootable in OS 9 if you used the install disc they provided with the machine at the time of sale.

You could try OS X 10.0 DP2 it included a similar GUI ,last public build while Aqua was still a secret, but uses the IOKIT driver model and a lot of improvements everywhere. Carbon was introduced there.

That's probably part of the problem. Although, the way you put it, it sounds a little too strict. It's not like they had one MacOS per machine.
But since everybody keeps telling me that my machine is just not compatible (and you guys obviously know what you're talking about), I'll follow z180s advice and try 10.0 DP2. Thanks a lot!

Can't we find any string inside those CDs in order to know what macs will actually work with it? I remember older versions of OS X had similar strings in installer files. Shouldn't it boot only to tell you that the pc you're trying to running it on is not compatible?
