Keep talking like that towards all the free experienced help and see where it gets you.

I'm not going to read every word in this thread. So you can either simply say "that didn't work" or keep rolling your eyes and making people not want to help you.

He's actually made a better point than you...

I retract all of my free, professional suggestions.

What you should really do is pay an incompetent Best Buy employee more than the computer is worth to fix it for you, or get advice from cocky, overbearing teenagers with no real-world experience to tell you that your personal preferences are wrong.

You're not exactly helping if you're not bothering to read the thread properly, I only told you twice and I only used the "Roll Eyes" expression once :?
I'm pretty sure we came to the conclusion that it's something wrong with the motherboard so if an admin wants to lock this thread then please do.

I'm not sure what you mean? As far as I know nothing else has been suggested which I can try (everything I've tried so far which was suggested did not work) so I'm probably going to try buying another motherboard. If that doesn't work then

ok, do you need a new mobo?? I think I have one laying around with on it a 800 MHz athlon, 2 ram slots, 2 PCI slot, 1 AGP slot, 2 usb (1.1) and integrated audio.. it's a very small motherboard but should be great.. do you want I check for it?? In case I can give it to you for free (you only pay shipping from Italy) as I don't need it anymore...

Check all the components of the computer to ensure that they are working properly, If other OS work then it may be a problem with the OS.

It's a problem with the hardware and not the OS. Despite the fact that I mainly want to put Windows 98 on it I did try Windows XP and 2000 on it with little success (both kept on giving me a BSOD or locking up during setup).

Yet to get round to buying another motherboard *hehe*

-No any other VGA card to start windows?
-Pull off the monitor cable from the VGA card, and start windows.
after 1-2 mins re plug it.

It could be posible that the memory, motherboard, or cpu is damaged from ESD. The memory and cpu are well known devices for this type of issues. Its deffinitly not because have to much memory installed because you would BSOD or another error before it would complete booting. Also try to update the Bios but good luck on finding updates p3 Motherboards.

Hey hogsy,
could you enter at your motherboard's BIOS and look for a voice like "AGP Aperture Size" or something similar?
Try to reduce that to the minimum.

I also built a Win98 (retro)gaming rig a while ago. Had a very similar problem, and spent *days* to figure out what was causing the problem.

hope this helps.

I had this problem, and it was the most unusual thing: the CPU. I took out the 1GHz Pentium 3 and put an 800MHz celeron I had laying around and its been solid as a rock ever since, it wasn't the RAM or motherboard like I thought, the CPU was just flaky. it was the CPU that came with the board in an Acer Aspire desktop from 2000, so it just went bad I guess. its an intel 815 chipset by the way

would this count as a triple bump? ;)

Probably, I suppose this has been solved already but I just haven't had the time to get round to buying some new components. Might be worth locking the thread.
