I see if people want to get a vintage Mac, they get an iMac G3. Well, the last OS that works (unofficially) is Leopard.

Yes. You may want to try Tiger then. It's normal speed on it.

I thought Leopard required a PowerPC G4 or newer.

Yeah, but you can trick OpenFirmware to temporarily tell an OS you have a G4 processor.

Macs are weird. You'll either have to burn that disc image from another Mac, or find a special disc burning tool for Windows in order to get it to burn properly.

ImgBurn is no good. I know I've asked here what tool to use, but I can't find the post again.

I think that model's latest OS support is 10.2 or 10.3.

My G3 400/DV ran OS 10.4 quite comfortably.

I stand corrected. Speaking of macs, I might get a G5 tower soon... ^^

Same here with me.

Offtopic Comment
I am thinking about selling my iMac G4. Haven't decided whether I want to or not. Plus not very many people would be interested. If I ever put it up on Ebay I will post it in the Trading forum, as it is called.

Yeah, but you can trick OpenFirmware to temporarily tell an OS you have a G4 processor.

Leopard requires a G4, I've seen people install it in 604 macs, but only after using a G4 card.

The Windows Disk Image Burner has worked great for me in the past, are you using a working disk image?

I usually use imgburn, find a toast, and rename it to iso. BTW, to boot CDs on a mac, you need to hold down C.

Stick with 10.4 if you want it usable.

Wherever you're sourcing your OS X 10.4 install image from, you must make sure you get the PowerPC version. I don't know if there was a retail version of Tiger which worked on Intels, but there are definitely some 10.4 Intel restore discs around, which won't work at all on your iMac. That also goes for Leopard install discs - there are Intel AND PowerPC versions available - you need PowerPC.

If your source material is in .DMG format (Which I'd expect), you need to use UltraISO or similar to convert to .ISO first, then burn as you would any ISO.

Tiger will run, but it will be quite slow. I recommend at least 256MB for Tiger…

Ah, probably it was on G4 then. I was mistaken. Then the latest supported OS for G3 is 10.4.

10.3 would run on it so smoothly.

On my slot-loading iMac G3 which came with OS 9.0.3, the install of OS X 10.2 was very simple and straight forward. Downloaded and burned the 10.2 CDs from the FTP (used ISO Recorder on Windows), and simply booted from CD by pressing and holding C on bootup. 10.2 runs smooth enough for me with 384 MB RAM on a 400 MHz G3.
