I managed to isolate MS-DOS 8 from windows Millenium and pack everything up in one floppy image, along with a small install program...

Now MS-DOS was at first made to launch exclusively Windows Me, you can consider it as a locked-down version compared to DOS 7.1... So it's a bit useless, for instance it cannot run Win3.11 in extended mode. But I thought it would be fun to have it, at least for collection :)

Here it is: MS-DOS 8 Standalone [us]

Lol, MS-DOS 6.22 came on only 3 (actually 4 if you count the extra disk) disks. You should have seen some Office 95 release that comes on nearly 30 disks. Now that's a headache...

I keep a separate copy of DOS from each of the Windows releases, including all variations of fix pack, normally under their build numbers (0950, 1111, 1998, 2222, 2400, 3000). Win95C and D used different version numbers for the GUI, but the underlying DOS is identical. 1111, 1998, 2222 and 2400 are all dos 7.1, with 2400 being my particular blend of it.

For DOS 8, things are more complex. MS-DOS 8 uses a packed loader, designed extensively to launch windows direct. You could unpack it with R Loew's utility, but the underlying DOS is not all that superior to 2400 (mostly 2222 with update patches), except that some Windows XP and later look for version 8.

There is an interesting version of MS-DOS 8 on the internet, that gathers a mob of interesting MSFT utilities, and uses my help system for standalone help. I wrote this help to cover in general, Win9x, and released it through MDGX's site. The assorted utilities have been updated with it (eg phatcode floppy-disk patch, patch for using HELP.HLP in the editor, open *.*) I have successfully applied all of these patches to the ibm, french and german versions as well.

Even without all of this addition, i still had some difficulty squeezing all of the stuff onto one floppy. Under-used utilities, like EDIT were dropped, and REGEDIT is the cut-back version of 40k, not the full one of 115K.

can you also isolate MS-DOS 7.0 from Windows 95? if it is possible, since MS-DOS 7.0 was going to be standalone (we have Beta 1 of it), MS-DOS 7.0 was later merged with Windows 95.

It's perfectly possible, I did it for my version of Windows 97... You can do it too: keep io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com, and the Windows\command folder, and delete everything else. You can also edit msdos.sys and add/replace those lines:

Code:
[Options]
BootGUI=1
Network=0
BootWarn=0
DisableLog=1
Systemreg=0
Logo=0

Yes, you can isolate DOS from Windows 9x in any version.

You can even run Windows 95 under DOS 7.10.2222 if you want.

This is a crc-sort table based on all of the versions of DOS 7/8. It includes share.exe at size 10304. This table was used to determine what is common among the various DOS versions. WINBOOT.SYS is another name for IO.SYS, and the assorted subdirectories like ebd and fix are later adustments to the file.

When one does checks on same-size same-name different-crc files, one finds that they are mainly dos-version checks.

The MS-DOS 7.00 beta 1 does not resemble the DOS 7.00 of Windows 9x. The review points for MS-DOS 700 beta 1 is 6.00, and for Win95dos is 701.

This means that MS-DOS 7.00 b1 is a lightly hacked version of DOS 6.00, it does not support drvspace, and its help file matches the ms-dos 6.00.

The second beta (which is discussed in Undocumented DOS, but elsewise not seen, is based on 6.22, has the review point 627 allocated. It does support drvspace.

The dos in 7.00 is based on something like beta-3 or later, contains a kernel that can dual-boot with ms-dos or pc-dos, but much of the stuff runs under pc-dos 7.0. Win95 dos 7.01 will indeed run Windows 3,1 without code modification: you can even have a windows 3.1 shortcut on the Windows 95 desktop.
