Hello everyone. I have been trying to experiment with my Coby Kyros 7012MID. It has Android 2.3 and is rooted, but I want to see if more is possible. Is it possible to run another OS on this tablet and if so, how? I am pretty eager to try something and see how it turns out because this tablet seems to be very flexible for only $80.

Hmm, Ice Cream Sandwich or Honeycomb perhaps?

Those are the best because are written for the arm CPU but you should find a proper rom for your device or write it on your own (but if no one has done it before, it's pretty hard) if you're wondering something else, you can try bochs (or qemu) and use it to emulate x86 cpus to run some older windows (win 95, 98...) but it's only for tryinh not for daily use :-)

I don't think you can run Windows Mobile or Windows Phone on it, so the only choice is Android and ARM builds of Linux.

Port ReactOS to it?

If you run Apple Rhapsody with Red Box you can even have Windows programs!

it's not working that way. tablets are embedded devices, which have their OS specifically tailored for them. you cannot just download some android (or other mobile OS) and run it on your tablet.

Well I know I can run other Android versions with a different ROM, but what about Linux? Is there anything you guys know for this specific tablet, or series of tablets that might help?

Well I'm pretty sure that they are making an ARM version but the tablet might be too slow for it. Thanks for the suggestion though. Will definitely look into it.

Explain the hardware of the device and I might be able to tell you if you can run it or not.

This is why one uses the verb "port".

Here's what the specs are:
Hardware Platform: PC
Processor: 1 GHz Unknown
Number of Processors: 1
RAM: 256 MB
RAM Type: DDR2 SDRAM

Hard Drive

Size: 4 GB
Type: Serial ATA

And I also have an 8GB memory stick, so space is not a problem.

yes, one has to actually invest work into making some system work on a particular device
I'm just guessing, but it seems to be some noname device, which makes it unlikely that someone already did this work

Plus, porting can only be done reasonably with source code available, which rules out Windows 8 (MS won't port it to some cheap noname thing, that doesn't do secure boot) and other proprietary systems (iOS, Playbook OS, (still) webOS).
So what's left? not too much...GNU/Linux could run, but the Android drivers are different (e.g. no X11), so there's not much available right now, plus there's next to none touch-oriented programs for a desktop-linux, which makes it kind of senseless to run on a tablet.

The ARM builds won't be released. It's also very unlikely that WOA will be released as a retail build. It will probably be preinstalled on tablets.

@orsg yeah it's kind of sad really. XDA is mainly about porting things to certain devices - without them it would not exist today most likely.

You should go with Honeycomb if it's possible I guess.

I have heard users report a lot of bugs in Honeycomb. Ice Cream Sandwich is the best available at the moment of writing.

But will his specs be able to run it smoothly? And I don't think so... Honeycomb has been perfected since the first release right?

Nothing is perfect on its first release.

Uh... yeah. I said it was perfected since it's first release.

Misunderstood. Thought you said "on it's first release".

My Wildfire begs to differ.
