One of my friends who had a Mac tried it, and said nothing really changed....

Also, I'm wondering if the removal of the word "Mac" means they are phasing out the Mac branding or integrating it with iOS more and more eventually.....

Dissapointed! Apple dropped support for MacBook 2,1 with this update.

That sucks.

Apple is pulling off the Mobile OS integration better than MS is. Apple is bringing features, MS is bringing the UI which I believe is worthless, even more since the desktop mode is losing its start orb.

Does anyone know what else lost support? An HCL of sorts on anyone's hands?

From the link posted from tuaw just a few posts up:

Quote:
The march of progress continues in OS X Mountain Lion, and with it comes a new set of minimum requirements. An anonymous developer clued us into the minimum requirements for OS X 10.8, and there's bad news for some older Mac owners. Mountain Lion will only run on the following Macs:

iMac (mid 2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, 2.4/2.2 GHz), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)

Us MacBook White users won't give up that easily :)

I'm downloading the dmg from whatever URL that was above. I'll upload to the server if it's not there when I finish.

I guess you can trick it to install on older models by editing/removing the PlatformSupport.plist file.

Thanks, I'll be doing that to my copy so I can get it to install on my MacBook 3,1. It's good to know that these can be modded so easily, I sell a LOT of MacBooks on eBay refurb and it's a good business. If the OS is not supported (A' la Core Duo models) the price is cut in half.

No problem. Here is also the SMBIOS information for your model:

Code:
Board Id: Mac-F4208CA9
Model Id: MacBook3,1
BOOT ROM Version: MB31.008E.B01
Serial Nr: W88033AKY51

I'll probably just go the remove route honestly, but thanks, I'll try that if it doesn't work.

So I came home to a finished download, although it really hasn't been verified yet. Should I upload it to the BA server?

Wait... how do I remove this file again? The DMG is read only.

-1. Unmount all previous installation medias (no matter if it's Snow Leopard, Lion, etc).
0. Make an empty 10 GB partition using Disk Utility (HFS+ Journaled).
1. Open up the package contents of "Install OS X Mountain Lion Preview 1.app".
2. Contents --> SharedSupport -->InstallESD.dmg
3. Mount that.
4. In Terminal:
Code:
open '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install ESD/BaseSystem.dmg'

5. If the command is stuck executing, press Ctrl+C to kill it, and try again.
6. Now you see the Base System window.
7. Using Disk Utility, apply that (not the .dmg, but the mounted Base System) to your empty partition you've created in step 0.
8. In Disk Utility, unmount your Base System (the one from .dmg).
9. In Terminal:
Code:
cd /Volumes; ls

10. You should have only Mac OS X Base System 1 in the list of volumes, no other Base Systems.
11. In Terminal:
Code:
cp '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install ESD/boot.efi' '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install ESD/kernelcache' '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install ESD/mach_kernel' '/Volumes/Mac OS X Base System 1'

12. In Terminal:
Code:
rm '/Volumes/Mac OS X Base System 1/System/Installation/Packages'

13. In Terminal:
Code:
cp -R '/Volumes/Mac OS X Install ESD/Packages' '/Volumes/Mac OS X Base System 1/System/Installation/'

14. Now unmount all DMGs, starting from the deepest one.
15. Now, on your 10 GB partition with Base System files, you can do whatever you want with the PlatformSupport.plist.
16. After you've edited/removed it, boot to that partition.
17. You will be presented by traditional style install with no hardware checks!
18. Install it.
19. After installation, you may also need to remove PlatformSupport.plist from already installed system.

have you actually ben running it?

Its actually very nice and its cool that they want to make it easier to sync with their own device's :)

Why make it 19 steps when you can make it 8-9 and without those commands? ;D

It's for older model users (like MacBook2,1 or 3,1), which Apple dropped support for.

Did you realise there were 21 steps?
BTW, those work fine for the old white MacBook.

Yeah, I already tried out, pretty cool. Some small changes like that make me happy (appears when copying files):

I'm pulling it down off the BA server now. Will try it out in about 9 hours...
