The Setup Assistant is great!

I had created such a program before for some other purpose. (Actually, I used Advanced Installer to help me!) And co-incidentally, you named it Setup Assistant, I had named it 'The Assistant'!!

So, is this Setup Assistant coded or is it some 3rd party tool?

And a suggestion: Try to use this program as your installer. 'Click Once Manifests' sucks!

EDIT: You have a typo! It's wizard, not wizzard!

I hope you won't sue me over the name... :P J/K. The installer can be a bit of a problem, but we'll see...

I believe I can safely call it "an invention of my own". It's actually a regular tab control with the tab headers moved out of the client area (they are under the application's title bar). And when a button is clicked, it switches to the next tab (a.k.a page). It's pretty simple, yet effective, as I find it more satisfying than any other Wizard control available on the net.

And I never learned how to properly spell "wizard"... XD

Well done linuxlove, I thought no one would find it, despite the fact that it's pretty obvious. :)

Anyway, that's how the panels will behave in Alpha 1 and onwards... But this easter egg is no longer included since build 24, but don't worry, I'll put something else in build 30. ;)

Another new thing comming in M3 & 4 are Accessories; tiny usefull apps that you can enabled if you want (that's what the wizzard's page 5 is for).

Will we be able to write our own Accessories? That would be pretty neat.

Well, TBH I have no idea. If I ever manage to implement some sort of a dev kit then yes. I never planned this to be possible, but it's also quite demanding, so I'll have to look into it...

But anyway, what I had in mind is a website reader (TTS), a clock, notes-like feature and such stuff...

I have just created the Wiki page for this project. There you can find a more detailed description and stuff like that. Also shown is a screen of build 30, which reveals a tiny new detail. ;)

Okay, I decided to cancel Milestone 4, because it would only unnecesarily extend the dev process. Therefore, the main feature of M4 - favourites - will be release in one of the M3 builds (but not yet in 30). The page 3 of the Assistant is skipped for this reason. We shall then go from M3 directly to Alpha 1 and then proceed as planned if nothing interferes.

I may also say another word or two regarding the Setup Assistant: it is almost complete. The last step in the way is the Step 4 page, which is used to configure Accessories and Extensions. Once that's done the build is ready to go. So far, there is only one Accessory available (clock), but I will soon add more in future builds. If you have any ideas, then please share.

That would be all. Expect build 30 to be ready within a few days tomorrow. ;)

EDIT: Build 30 will be release tomorrow (12th February).

Build 30 is here with the following changes since build 24:

+ Setup Assistant
+ Accessories (Clock)
+ New easter egg
* Download manager improvements
* Settings dialog improvements
* New logo
* Several other mods

As you can see, I've put in a new Easter Egg - another demo of a feature comming in Alpha 1. The download link is in OP, you will also be notified upon start-up if you have Update checking enabled. We're now moving onto build 31, which is an interim build, so don't expect anything major. Expected release date is 20th February. ;)

Here's some stuff I noticed with Build 30:
  • Setup Assistant didn't detect my installation of Oracle Java 7 x64
  • The clock covers up the Manager button and cannot be moved
  • The maximized clock is too big for its form and does not automatically resize itself

Yeah, it's still a bit buggy and doesn't support 64-bit extensions.

These all work fine for me, though it could be an issue with screen res/DPI settings. Perhaps you could provide a screenshot of the issue? I'll see if anyone else has these issues and look into it... :?

It could be a region issue. I'm in the United States and we use 12-hour time over here, so there's an AM or PM marker at the end of the time.

Another issue I found was that when you disable and then re-enable the clock, you have to restart Codename Poseidon in order for the clock to show up.

Ah... I didn't think of that. Thanks for letting me know, will be fixed in build 31.

As for the needed restart, that's not a bug. If you change any settings you must restart the browser in order to take effect. This will be adressed in the future...

Very first post in the thread:

Build 30 (Milestone 3). That text is a Mediafire link.

As a general question, where does Poseidon keep its configuration settings? I checked in Application Data\Local but all I saw were some folders for 2x M2 builds and not 3x M3 builds.

You may want to set the shutdown mode to "When startup form closes" instead of "When last form closes" by the way.

I'm using the Settings feature under the Project properties and it works damn well. So I think there is no external way to modify them...

Build 31 has been released, bringing minor changes and fixes (the largest being the FAQ):

+ FAQ
+ Settings: main window always on-top
+ Settings: close or minimize to tray icon
* Main window: changed UI color to slightly lighter
* Clock: fixed regional settings issues
* Other minor fixes and changes

Build 36 is scheduled for 29th February and it will finally bring Favourites.

Something I'd like to see implemented would be keyboard shortcuts, like F5 for refresh.

Yeah. Those would be possible, and easy to implement, I guess.

EDIT: Wait, it should be already there.

@linuxlove, prayaas1998: I only implemented ENTER for go so far. F5 and others come as part of UX pack in Alpha 1. Just wait a little longer (or not so long)... ;)

@Dans34: congratulations, you've found another easter egg! This is (obviously) a demo of custom colors feature that will also be introduced in Alpha 1. :)

Looks like build 36 will have to be delayed, as I've got a lot of stuff going on right now... Also, due to host changes, the update checking feature in all builds so far (including 31) will no longer work so remember to check for update yourself when it's released.

Alright, here's an update from me:

1. About Windows 8 compatibility: I (finally) installed Windows 8 CP and said to myself "why not open Poseidon to see if it works". Well, build 31 has some medium issues on several occassions, but 36 (in it's current state) seems to run fine. Therefore, I do NOT recommend using Poseidon on Windows 8 CP.

2. About build 36 and future development: real life has really taken over this time, and I just don't find the time to do much coding... I did implement about 40% of the Favourites feature, as well as started work on another new accessory. Hopefully, I'll get the build finished before the end of March and then move on to Alpha 1... So stay tuned for further updates on this subject.
