I think the final RTM build number is 8600

That's it. Everyone just stop speculating on the RTM build number until Windows 8 gets to the RTM stage, alright?

Well, as far as the RTM build number is concerned, I think that knowing from Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 earlier (and probably for the reasons that PryStar93 mentioned above), it will almost certain end in "00".

However, I do not think that it will be exactly the same as that of Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 (the same build number with exception to the first digit, "8" instead of "7"), since we knew that although the RTM release of Windows Vista was, for the first release, Build 6000, and for the Service Pack 1 release of Windows Vista, as well as Windows Server 2008, Build 6001, the RTM release of Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 was not Build 7000 or Build 8000, but rather Build 7600, with the Service Pack 1 build number being Build 7601.

As such, I would say that almost certainly, as with Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 earlier, the build number of the RTM release of Windows 8 will end in "00", and will also have an extension, for example:

Build 8500.17754 (compare with Build 7600.16385).

However, despite the fact that we can already tell how the build number will almost certainly appear, since not even the Release Candidate or pre-RTM builds of Windows 8 have been compiled yet (let alone the actual RTM "Gold" build, or even the RTM Candidate builds, from where the RTM "Gold" build has been selected for Windows), we otherwise can't tell the exact build number for the RTM build of Windows 8.

I will say this, though, that we might receive the RTM Candidate builds of Windows 8, and that one of them will be selected as the RTM "Gold" release of Windows 8, just as we did earlier with Windows 7/Server 2008 R2, not to mention that even if such a build is declared as being RTM "Gold" (meaning that it will therefore be deleted from the BetaArchive FTP server), I'll still keep it nonetheless - I'm making an effort to keep all of the Windows 8 builds that I happen to receive.

It might be a bit of a long post, but I thought I might just explain it a bit.

Nothing says the RTM build has to end in 00.
  • Windows NT 3.5 RTM: 806
  • Windows NT 3.51 RTM: 1057
  • Windows 98 RTM: 1998
  • Windows 98 Second Edition RTM: 2222A
  • Windows 2000 RTM: 2195

I only said "00" because of the more recent versions of Windows having RTM builds ending in "00": Windows Vista/Server 2008 and WIndows 7/Server 2008 R2 (even Windows XP's RTM build number ended in "00", and although Windows Server 2003's build number ended in a higher build number, it had also been compiled for over a year after Windows XP, despite originally sharing the same builds when development started as the Server counterpart of Whistler).

No offence at all or anything, but those versions of Windows that you listed above are all older versions of Windows. Remember that some versions of Windows are so old that they even predate strict build numbers.

But the fact remains the same that since Windows Vista, the RTM build number has always ended in "00", and as such, I'm referring to those, because those are the most recent versions of Windows. Likewise, the Service Pack releases increase the first portion of the build number by one digit (as in "6001", "6002", "7601", etc...), again, since Windows Vista/Server 2008, whereas this also wasn't true of the earlier versions of Windows.

However, as I've also said above, although we have quite a strong idea as to what the build number will be like, no one will know the exact build number of the RTM build of Windows 8 until news is released of its compilation.

807 for NT 3.5 not 806.

About the build number, I'm not willing to expect what I guessed was right. I've only read this before:
http://www.cnbeta.com/articles/94921.htm

This article talks about the origin of Windows 7 Final RTM Build numbers. It discussed why build numbers end with "00". There's a story about this. At the period of Windows XP development, a new manager from Connect brought this "00" end "convension". And before he came, the build number was added one by one rather than sharp ones.

And the "technical" reason of being divided by 16 is that the QFE Team preserves the last 4 bits for service packs, thus 16 SPs are preserved. (Well, I actually don't know why they preserve such many SPs) This is a requirement from Windows Vista, yet the article doesn't explain the reason why Vista need this, just says it's a demand of Vista and later OS.

Thouth there are "convensions" & "requirements", I'm also not able to say what will be the exact build number of Windows 8 RTM.

Could you possibly upload it to YouTube (if you can)? My system can't play the file, although I still have yet to try my other system configuration (the one that I'm using to beta test Windows 8).

Wow... I must admit I'm impressed. But the main page seems to be taking heavy traffic... :(

He also sent me a YouTube link (which is not from him) in a private message, so if you want, I could post it here, since it might not be as likely to buckle under cover from too much traffic.

IIRC someone claimed it was fake due to the wallpaper, which was posted in 2010 when M3 wasn't even started...

Just because the wallpaper was posted earlier, doesn't mean that it's a fake at all.

Sure, it could have been a user modification, but it might not even be that (remember that the earliest builds reused the Beta Fish wallpaper from some beta builds of Windows 7, back before it was renamed from post-RTM Windows 7 to Windows 8, before Microsoft really knew where the project was going), also, remember that even the newest versions of Windows have wallpapers from earlier versions.

The wallpaper alone says hardly anything about the build (at least directly).

What I have to say about Windows 8 is this: I remember when it was just a post-RTM update to Windows 7 and nothing more (and certainly nothing less).

I also remember when Windows 8 became widely available on the Internet back in April, and how everyone was trying to search for anything in such earlier builds as Build 7850, Build 7955, and Build 7959 that wasn't already in Windows 7.

Finally, I remember when this topic was created, and when I was constantly updating my The Beta Group/AbandoNet version of the Microsoft OS Checklist with new Windows 8 builds, and how I was seeing (from all of the topics here regarding it at the time) numerous pieces of information, and even screenshots relating to Windows 8.

Now, I'm seeing what is essentially a countdown to the Public Beta (Consumer Preview) release of Windows 8, and as such, I have watched Windows 8 come a long way in the two years of its development.

Microsoft has worked extremely hard on Windows 8, and seeing any Windows 8 build from the widely available Developer Preview (Build 8102) and similar builds onwards proves it.

I think that Windows 8 will be a widespread success, not only because of its updates, but also how it will significantly improve the image of Windows in the market place (NOT just because of its aim for more Windows market share on slate tablet PCs, or even its compatibility with the ARM architecture).
