Last time I installed Windows 98 (SE) was several years ago but Windows Update still worked fine. If that's no longer the case, you might find the HPC Factor patching guide useful: http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/patching/win98/
It covers both 98 and 98 SE and may list patches that aren't offered by Windows Update as an added bonus.

The last time I tried to run windows Update through Windows 98 (1st. Edition) it worked fine, but that was about a year ago, and as others have said above, I do believe that Microsoft has discontined Windows Update for the 9x line.

Oh Yes! As stated above, you must install Internet Explorer 6 SP1 onto Windows 98 first, before Windows Update will work again. This way, when you download and install the new Version of Internet Explorer, it also installs a newer version of Windows Update. This should solve your problem if your looking to install updates for Windows 98 1st edition and 2nd edition.

Is there a way to download and keep them for offline install? I couldn't find any Windows 98 update in the Update Catalog. I know that Windows Update for Win98 downloads the updates as .exe and silent install them. I'll try to capture the HTTP responses to save these exe's. If I'm sucessful, I'll download all the updates that I can (pt-BR), we don't know when Microsoft will permanently remove everything. And if I'm sucessful, I may download an en-US Win98 to download all the updates.

There is. Actually I did the similar when I was using Windows ME, and it should be the same situation of Windows 98.
When I checked for updates (that was at about before 2003) I went to the cache folder of updates and saved some patches. Now they could be found nowhere in my PC, but it should be also possible to use a pack of prepared update pack made by someone (some unofficial Service Pack for win98 which are actually update packs may be found.)
In another word it is able to install updates via standalone. EXE patches.

A folder named MSDownload.tmp (if what I remembered was right) in X:\Windows folder. It might be hidden and can be found when downloading updates with Windows Update. Yet it is usually automatically deleted after updates successfully installed, therefore if there is a way to "capture" the updates the best opportunity should be when downloading.

Thanks to some posts above I tried updating Windows 98 SE (Dutch) within VPC as well on my HP Brio but no luck on both... The Windows Update page is still playing ping-pong...
I have updated bothe the W98SE installations... On the HP Brio with the Dutch IE6 SP1 MSDN package and within VPC I used the on-line installer you could still download from the Microsoft website...
Have not checked if the procedure works with an English installation of W98SE but on the Dutch version it won't...

I can't run Windows Virtual PC on my Celeron 430 @ 1.6GHz to install Win98 :< I have here a Dual-Core E2220 @ 2.20GHz. I'll install it later when I buy thermal compound and add 2GB, I think it can run WVPC. And I'll try to capture the packets.
@MBaNL: Have you installed Internet Explorer 6 for Windows 98?

There is only one pachage on MSDN so I think everything is in there and the web package from Microsoft.com downloads all the the files with the installer... so what version are you referring to?

Windows Update does work. But only on Internet Explorer 6.
hmmm.... now you say it should work on IE6... others say its IE6 SP1.
Neither way it works with the Dutch version of Windows 98 SE... still not tested the English version... will do that soon...

Are you really getting Windows Update for Windows 98 to work? Been trying without success in Windows 98 (first edition) with IE 5.5 SP2 and 6.0 SP1 and it just keeps redirecting back and forth. Been reading threads (both here and other forums) that's been unsuccessful with using Windows Update v4 since half a year ago or so. Havn't really seen anyone claiming they got it working recently except in this thread, so if it does indeed work as of today, please provide some details how you got it working.

Can someone point me a virtualization tool that works good on windows 7 x64, 4gb ram, celeron 430 @ 1.8 GHz so I can test it here. Windows Virtual PC is slow.
