Hello :D

I have an IBM Thinkpad 760CD. As of now, it has the following wrong with it:

Failed System Board
Broken Plastics
Bad Condition
In pieces, completely!

So, should I keep it, sell it on eBay or bin it? I'm leaning towards bin?

Thankyou!

Does this mean that it doesn't work or does this mean it crashes sometimes?

I would keep it. Also, in any case, there are some devices that are working (CPU, RAM, HDD).

I'd bin it. I had one like that once. It wasn't worth keeping because it had water damage, but still worked...but was total crud.

@eggi: Would anyone buy a 16 year old completely broken laptop?

Personally, I'd scrap it for good parts, then bin it, who knows, you could probably get a scrapper from Ebay, and take your scraps and rebuild it.

I'd throw it out. It's not worth trying to repair that one.

It IS worth repairing because it's old and rare.

Fun thing about is, that it keeps you busy, and you "Learn"!

Yes, it's old but it's certainly not rare. I had four or five ThinkPad 760-series machines in my house at one point.

If it had a working motherboard, I would have said to try and fix it, but since the motherboard is broken, it's going to cost more than the laptop is worth to fix it.

Old, yes. Rare? Not a chance. Those things are a dime a dozen. Not worth your time at all to grab an o-scope and start probing around without a clue what you're doing, and possibly end up spending forever to repair broken traces to get a generic beige-box late-90s lappie working again.

My suggestion? Grab the HDD, maybe the screen, and the RAM. Junk the rest or turn it into a weird techno-cool sculpture. You never know, you might run across a similar laptop you can use the hdd and RAM in, and the screen is just fun to screw with :P

Tandyman: I already have nicked the HD and it is working away in a Compaq LTE. The screen i will also keep. Can the battery be used with other models from that era?

I just bought an IMB Thinkpad off ebay to do some testing last week. They come pretty cheap.

I'd salvage the useful parts and throw the rest.

OS? Windows XP SP3, of course.
Well, the only thing I can think of is to sell it. It has valuable pieces in it, and someone who might need a spare part or two might find your auction at ebay, so... sell it! (don't be too greedy, though ;))

Sometimes the board just has a faultly power jack, or it may be the charger... Easy to fix if that's the problem...

If the MB is completely defective, I'd keep it for parts, at least for the LCD, RAM, disc drive and Hard disk...

If you're in the "hacker mood", you can try one of those board that can turn an old PC LCD screen onto a complete separate screen (Here are one of those) May be a cool project. You can also use the disk drive for another PC-just use a converter board that snaps into the connector ;)
