Can I run a 6850 and 6770 at the same time? Or does it have to be the same model GPU... Thanks

They can be in the system as 2 cards, however you can not run them in Crossfire as they are 2 different models.

not true but correct in this case. If it was a 6790 it could cross with a 6850 - certainly not the same model.

The general rule with AMD/ATi cards is that they have to be in the same "hundred" series. For example, I have a 4870 crossfired with a 4890.

Its generally correct but 6790 is the same architecture as the 6850/6870 which is why you can crossfire it.

Like I said, that's a general rule. For more precise info, check the Crossfire chart on the AMD website (as in zamadatix's post).
