Hey, I'm wondering, is Microsoft updating WDP? I mean, is this still the same version as the one it was when they first released it in public? I've read somewhere it has been updated, but you can't automatically update it from previous version of WDP, but you have to download a new one and install it again, so I'm wondering if someone is just messing with my head or Microsoft really updated from 8102 to 8149? It's quite possible I just misunderstood the whole thing and WDP build is 8102 and it's going to stay like that, and this guy wants Microsoft to update to 8149 xD
The next public version will be the Beta, soon. No clue why you're interested 8149.
So there have been no major updates made to WDP since it's release?
I'm interested to see if there is newer version of WDP available, so I'd try it out before Beta - if not, I'll just wait another month or two and that's it - I'll pass on WDP thingie.

I DO remember hearing a rumor about a version 6.2.8149 before, but so far that's all it is. A rumor. As Andrew Tapferke said, the beta will be out soon, and IIRC it'll be v8175 or so, so it's even NEWER than the aforementioned mythical build.

He's asking if there was a build 8149 released or leaked at some point, simple as that. He's saying he heard that this build WAS in the wild, but that you couldn't update to it from the WDP, that it has to be freshly installed. AFAIK no such build has leaked, per my answer above.

The rumour was launched by Win8China, stating that the public Beta may be 8130. However, it wasn't. There is nothing special about 8149. IIRC, some pics were leaked by canouna.

I see, I get it now, thank you. I just misunderstood the guy, I guess he was asking the same, wasn't saying such thing was done. It's maybe even better like this - BETA shall be far more interesting then

Wow, they finally revamped this! Kudos to Microsoft. This dialog had been the same since Windows NT 3.1, if I'm not mistaken. Now you can do everything within the same dialog window without having dozens of child windows opened. And if you need to elevate the process for some functions that require admin rights, it closes the non-elevated process and reopens it elevated (unlike what has been in Vista and 7, where the non-elevated process was left open even after opening the elevated one). It's now less cumbersome and messy to set permissions, thankfully.
EDIT: There are still some things related to permission dialogs that need updating, however. In particular, the dialog window for adding users needs to be updated to at least have a white background and use Segoe UI as the font. Also, the sharing permissions dialog is still the old one.

Microsoft releases updates sometimes, but for the public it are only some bugfixes and it stays on the same buildnumber. Builds themself are complety new builds and are not available to the main public, only to some trusted testers and internal testers.

Guys, it could just be a misunderstanding, since SCREENSHOTS of 8172 have leaked. Maybe it'd be good to find out where he got his info before jumping all over him. Just saying.

Well, just to be sure, I would still greatly appreciate if he posted any proof that Build 8172 was indeed released onto torrents and FTP servers, just in case.
It could also be that Build 8172 in this case is just a mistyping of Build 8102, but I highly doubt it.

I haven't seen a cited source for ANYTHING yet, Smorgan. How can you evaluate the value of a source that hasn't been presented yet?

Because the information I have says that 8172 is buggy and not the gold build for the lead up to beta. The gold pre beta was 8175 from what the Chinese are saying. The road to beta is like this the 8175 has been presented to the TAP group (private testing) which will vote on which build will be released (MS connected TAP members have the build already). In other words 8200 will be the official beta in February which is what the site canouna is on aka winunleaked.tk. Thus I can say that the sources here are complete crud as beta archive is the last site to get news.
Yahh for me having good sources.

Funny, I hadn't heard ANY of this, and BetaArchive is NOT the only site I get my news from. And nobody's claiming that 8172 is the "gold" build, so I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.

I guess I'll be nicer. At this point Build 8175 is not in the wild nor will be and I'd rather not be quoted in other forums so best to leave it at that. To be curt people should just wait until the public beta is released by MS.

Nevermind, started working after installing an office update from Win Update, restarting and accepting prompt to install .net 3.5.1 automatically.. also ran it in Win 7 compat. mode, not sure if that made any difference though, didn't help before the update.
