Is it possible that two 3.5mm audio cables (one for speaker and one for microphone) could be combined into one (each has a connector on one side and a dead end on the other side)?

Yes, but if your sound card supports 3 outputs on one connector. Example:

This one does NOT support that system:

Oh you mean 2 and 3 rings on a jack? Well, both of these cables have only 2...

A more detailed explanation: I got these two cables from my speakers once they died. I also have a desktop monitor with a built-in speaker and audio plug. So, I came up with an idea to combine these two cables into one and then connect the monitor to the soundcard.

Yes. Probably this is the cable you need. Here is a quick drawing in Microsoft Paint:

No you don't need a 3 ring jack... A soundcard output only supports 2 rings, unless it's a SuperTools SUX9000 sound adapter. All you do is stitch the two leads together at any point of choice and you should be set to go.

Oh and yes, you should just go get an adapter instead, it's a lot easier than messing on with tiny wires.

3 rings are generally used on phone headsets. Mic, L and R respectively.

I tried stitching them together and there was no sound comming from the speaker, though the connection has been recognized... There are actually two sets of wires inside; the first set is right under the first layer of isolation, and then it's the second layer of isolation containing the second set of wires...

Like I say 3.5mm cable is just too small to be worth working with. You could get yourself a twin output 3 ring adapter for a couple of bob and then use a couple of 3.5mm male to male jack leads.
EDIT: just understood what you want to do now properly. I take it you want to use a phone headset or something?

Exactly. Again, here's what I wish to do: I have a desktop monitor with a build-in speaker. I need a cable to connect it to the soundcard, and since I got two spare cables, I thought I could just tape them together and see if it works. But it didn't.

Oh I see now. Well like I say, you can get cables for pennies nowadays. Get yourself on ebay or somewhere. You'll have more headaches stitching cheap 3.5mm lead wires together than what you would get buying a new lead.

Ahh. You just need a generic line in cable.

Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-3-5mm-Mal ... 41611bf58b

Many phones use a 4 wire 3.5mm cable with wires for left, right, mic and ground, but the jack has to support this. I suppose you could splice your own cable together using a 4 wire cable, but I don't see the point unless you are doing a long wire run between the computer and the mic/speakers.
