I use VMware Workstation 8 and Whistler 2419's installer can't detect the hard drive at all.
You may say "oh, it's vmware workstation 8 use sumthing difrent" but on Microsoft Collection Book, it clearly shows VMware Workstation 8 being used to install Whistler 2419.

So what's wrong? I formatted the drive in FDISK via a Windows 98SE bootdisk.

Did you try changing from IDE mode to SCSI and vice versa?

I would use VPC2007. Also, what if he's using VMWare 7.0? (Rob Janson)

XP, is there a reason you couldn't format the disk during Whistler's setup? Also, did you format the disk in NTFS? I've had major trouble trying to install NT-based OSes on FAT or EXT-formatted hard disks, including disk detection issues. Just something to consider. Alternatively, you could create and install the hard disk in Virtualbox (as a VHD), then use it in VMware Workstation. VHD format is cross-compatible, and this may be a good way to find out whether the problem is with Whistler or with VMware.

I guess I could use VirtualBox. The problem I had with VBox, on any version (Windows, Mac, Linux) is that it tends to, um, not be very good with Whistler builds.

There's no option for that in the BIOS.

Look at the screenshots.
It clearly shows VMware Workstation 8, as VMware 7 would use Windows Vista/7's menu style instead of its own.

I mean during the virtual machine creation. If you select custom, you can select the hard drive type.

I use VirtualBox 4 for most betas now. I don't like VPC as much because it doesn't accept dynamically allocated virtual hard drives therefore some of the hard drive could be wasted.

It's only because of your website, don't worry *hehe*

I agree, VPC is better for older beta's because the ''hardware'' Microsoft Virtual PC uses is out-of-the-box compatible with those older beta's.
After Microsoft Windows XP (or with the RTM) I tend to use VMWare Workstation sooner then Microsoft Virtual PC.

Microsoft Virtual PC by default created an dynamically allocated virtual harddrive (as with VMWare Workstation/Player and Oracle Virtualbox).
Only if you delete files on it, it doesn't shrink (as with all of those drives), but there is an precompacter available which ''shrinks'' the drive.
