A good friend of mine is building two new Linux distros one based on Debian and the other on Libranet. The Debian based one is for those who are annoyed with the new modern Ubuntu and the Libranet one is for those who loved older Linux but want modern programs. He was originally going to call it Libranet 4.0 but for reasons he has changed it. Check out the site and support the new Linux project. He plans to have the first Alpha out next summer.

Right now he is working on a Pre-Alpha build which will be coming out soon. It will probably come out in december, as well as a bug tracker and testing instructions. The Distros will not include OpenOffice or LibraOffice/LibreOffice but will have GNOME office (AbiWord, Gnumeric, GLOM, Inkscape, GIMP, etc.). Instead, they can be installed from the net optionally. Certain CD sets may include them by default, but most won't.

He knows that some of you may be questioning his choosing to base it on Debian 6, but for clarification he has stated that there will be 2 main lines: one based on the modern Linuxes, and the other based on old-timers.

Why does ANYONE build a custom Linux distro? He perceives a need and wants to fill it. To be frank, I'm gonna give the Debian-based one a spin. I may love Unity and all the flashy features in Ubuntu 11.10, but the program hangs and frequent bugs are getting on my nerves.

That is the exact reason he is doing it. I run Ubuntu on a nice laptop but programs still hang and of coarse the bugs are just annoying. Hope Ubuntu 12.04 is better.

Unfortunately, it probably won't be. There've been complaints in ALL the major distros lately that devs are focusing so much on their flashy new display shells (GNOME Shell, Unity, etc) that critical bugs in other areas are being waitlisted, or even ignored entirely. I've been an Ubuntu fanboy since 7.10, but I'm getting tired of this. I may be switching to Pinguy or LinuxLex OS or something else soon. If your friend's first alpha comes out soon, I'll be eager to give it a try.

I have been a fan of Ubuntu fanboy since 7.10 too. My friend may possible run a little late ,because he is a busy person, but so far LibraNext seems to be on schedule.

Yeah. I'd offer to help, but I'm useless for coding. About all I could do would be compile packages from source and install them. Is he using standard .deb packaging, or is he moving to some other format like RPM?

The official code name for the LibraNext Alpha 1 is Hydrogen.
