I'm wondering if it would be fine for me to upload old minecraft versions to the FTP, I have a copy of nearly every version apart from the some of the early creatives (I've got the ver with block placing modes!) for survival alpha and beta I have
Minecraft Creeper test Infdev Alpha 1 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 1.66 1.7.3 1.8 pre 1 1.8 pre 2 1.8 1.8.1 1.9 pre 1 1.9 pre 2 1.9 pre 3 1.9 pre 4
Most versions I have the server for as well (early minecraft was fun wasnt it?)

Based on what Mojang says you technically are not allowed to distribute full jar files of the different games, however I'm not quite sure it would matter if you uploaded to the FTP.

Could be a grey area.

Do not distribute anything we've made. This includes, but not limited to, the client or the server software for the game. This also includes modified versions of anything we've made.

It does say "Copyright Mojang AB - Do not distribute" at the bottom, but if you upload it, I guess if it needs to be deleted, it can. I would say go ahead and upload it, (partially because I want them)

But based on that, mods would not be allowed either and they are, so...
Mods are not against Minecraft's TOS because the mods are not distributed bundled with minecraft.jar. The class files for the mod are distributed instead, and users must mod the jar themselves.
As for chucking up the old versions of Minecraft on the FTP, I would imagine that would be against Minecraft's TOS.

If we did everything according to the distributors TOS then this site would be empty. Old versions are not supported or available, or even possible to use against the official servers so I don't see a problem uploading them. And if they do we'll remove them.

I would remind you people tho that the singleplayer version was available for free on the website, it was only the multiplayer function that cost money. MCNostalgia is even offered on their own forums without any complaints. So I don't see any problems distributing their clients since the multiplayer part won't work without paying for it anyway.
Or have I forgotten anything that would change all this?
