So I wanted to get Howl's Moving Castle onto my iPod (this is the first time I've attempted DVD ripping and converting), so I shoved the DVD in mah drive, configured and ran Handbrake, and it didn't work, to put it simply. Figured that it must be the encryption, so I used DVD Decrypter. Decrypted and copied all the files in the disc's VIDEO_TS folder onto my hard drive, and then got Handbrake to select that folder on the hard drive. Scanned fine, I selected the relevant sections, chapters, audio, subtitles, etc., opened up Activity Log, and pressed Start.

It failed. I'm not sure how to resolve it. AFAIK, this is the best program for the job, so I'd like to persevere with it for now. Log here (starting just after the scan log, which contains no errors and worked fine anyway):

Thanks in advance, people! Also, I'm not distributing this in any way, so I'm not supporting piracy.

EDIT: Well, I got DVD Decrypter to work in IFO mode, with no file splitting, so it copied one VOB file containing just the film and its sound to my hard drive. Handbrake seems to play nicely with that, so that's great. However, although it's no great problem, I'd still like to know what goes wrong when you try to use the first method (which Handbrake is supposed to support anyway).

Hi,

How did you install handbrake, it seems from the log you provided that some of the support files needed are either missing or are the wrong versions.

Kindest regards

James

It's giving you an error about encryption. Don't use DVD Decrypter as it's outdated and doesn't work on all DVDs. I'll suggest AnyDVD. http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

EDIT: I had no idea Handbrake would use libdvdcss from VLC. You just need to install VLC and try to play the movie. If it works you're probably in luck. Then open Handbrake -> Tools -> Options -> Picture -> Browse to and select \Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

I don't think this will help if the disc has any other kind of copy protection and I've personally had really good luck with AnyDVD but if there is a free alternative then you can't beat that.

dvd fab will make quick work of that. i love it. also a free alternative is format factory http://www.formatoz.com/download.html either should work for ya just fine..

(edit: fyi video is usually in mp4 format for your ipod/iphone/zune.lol. least thats the easiest format ive found to work with. i think h.264 and mov. are supported too)

Thanks guys, I will try what you've said.

But, DVD Decrypter has been working for me, and I've used Handbrake successfully now by first using DVD Decrypter to take the main movie's VOB files and chuck them all together into one large VOB file, which Handbrake seems to work with fine.

I will try what's said here as it may improve the situation! :)
