How can I close Metro apps in Windows 8 other than using task manager?

Click on the start button to return to the START screen, but the application will continue to run.
The only was is through the tm.exe (New Taskmanager).

@Pwned, that is still using Task Manager (which the OP doesn't want).

Yes, but there is another way in my post, by just pressing the Windows button, that's like virtual "close", like on the iPad and Mac OS X.

It seems no one found it: click on the left side of the screen can switch between metro apps and desktop. Click on the left side of the screen one or a few times, go back to the desktop and use tm.exe to close metro apps.

I know about those methods. So bad there's no close button.

Hello, I just use good old Alt-F4... that seems to close most metro apps.

Really? I had found I can't alt+f4 out of the apps. What I caught onto is a suspended app isn't using resources if they are needed by another program but it will stay in RAM as long as it can (just like supefetch caches things). Other than an application hang (which you would use the task manager for) you arn't supposed to close them as closing them has no meaning in terms of resources being used. Logging off/shutting down should properly close them though if you have the need.

(Oops my previous post was meant to have been a new topic!)

I just tried it, Alt-F4 works here. I tried it in the "Metroized" Internet Explorer and the Labyrinth game - in both cases I'm returned to the main Metro screen. Also, the state of the program is lost -- when I start it again, it starts in a "clean" state.

This is on the Windows 8 Developer Preview.

It's not just you. Alt+F4 has never worked for me to close Metro applications.

The only way the close the applications is to go to the task manager (new one) and end the application.

That's weird, maybe I should post a YouTube video of me closing metro apps using Alt-F4 ;-) No seriously, it really does work. Are you using the same build as I am? The Windows 8 Developer Preview from September? I have made no changes to the system -- but it did automaticalyl suggest to install, which I did, some Microsoft add-ons for the keyboard and mouse since I'm using Microsoft keyboard+mouse, but I doubt this itself should make Alt-F4 work better.

@kenzorio, it doesn't work... You did some settings or maybe the add-ons did some settings. But I assure you, out of the box, it doesn't work.

I assure I didn't change any settings. I Googled... this intro guide to Windows 8 mentions the Alt-F4:

http://limegarden.net/2011/09/14/test-run-windows-8/

There's also other people mentioning it works for them:

http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeeh ... Metro-Apps

As to why it doesn't work for everyone, I cannot say.
