Do all members get 50 GB bandwidth?

Also, I don't like the IP lock stuff. I log in from different computers on different networks. I'm not on the IP my FTP account is locked to right now.

ftp servers -> update IP lock. You shouldn't need to download from both places at the same time. Hopefully in the future it can be a bit more convenient however.

As above you shouldn't need to download in 2 places at once so just update the IP lock. This system is in place to prevent password leaking and mass leeching.

Um, I might get serious problems with IP lock. I'm still very slow at downloading files, and if my IP keeps changing all of sudden, I might never even manage to download something, as I'll have to update IP lock every day or even less than day.

The IP is not an internal IP, but the IP you get from your ISP, as long as your Modem/Router stays on, it does not change.

Actually Rob, it can chance if the lease expires. Internal IP's shouldn't change but external might, it all depends on the ISP. If your ISP's is changing lots, then something is wrong as it shouldn't be changing more often than 12 hours apart, or if you lose sync with the exchange (for ADSL).

Well, here in the Netherlands, even if on ADSL, you get the same IP again, at KPN where I work, otherwise an blacklist does not work.

On your ISP perhaps, not all ISP's work the same way. Every ISP uses different lease times and IP allocation. I always get the same IP back as it's sticky to the MAC address of the modem. Others may not.

Plenty of people don't have static IP's or are allocated the same IP over and over.. majority of providers down under charge extra for a static IP

Maybe that could be the reason why I find suddenly my router disconnects me from the internet (I'm connected by Wireless to it), and sometimes it reboots itself. Still not sure if that's what happening since in other location I don't experience this issue.

For example: my IP starts with 95.27.xxx.xxx , then after reconnecting upon sudden disconnect it changes to (for example) 95.23.xxx.xxx or 92.xxx.xxx.xxx . Weird.

Well, I doubt many has a static IP. I don't even have those, nor would I want any.

But there's no point arguing about this update, it was implemented primarily to prevent account theft and leaking. Not to make your lives miserable. It's unfortunate it doesn't work with everyone, but if we have to choose between having account leaks and "friendly loans" of the account vs no leaks and with only a select few with IP issues (issues which should be taken up with their ISP) then we select the latter. Not everyone respects the rules and hard work we put into this site, so we had to take measures to make sure that our members get the most out of the site, and not some outside leechers with a sorry life and questionable morals. Or have you all already forgotten the multiple account leaks we had every now and then and how much extra work it caused us? And we know it was BA members leaking the accounts by their own will, and we also have a fair idea of who these members are.

And this way you have at least the option to renew the IP lock. We could have gone with a one IP/go through the forum every time you want to connect instead. Or we'll just move the entire FTP to a new VIP section where we trust everyone not leaking the account.

We will try to sort out any issues and improve the service, but we will not remove the IP lock for anyone, nor will we allow multiple IPs at the same time. Where ever you are and need to grab a file you need to re-lock your IP. That's that.

And an ISP that forces you to change IP even when you're connected has massive overbooking problem. You should never be forced to change IP unless your modem/connection goes offline, then your IP will be freed for someone else to use when they connect. But as long as you're connected you should keep your IP. All respectable ISPs with DHCP follows this. Some even reserve the IP for you for a few hours even if you're disconnected.

At some point you admins might want a good coder who can create a small dhcp client which connects to your database and updates peoples ip's. Of course if there is a login system it can easily be integrated into the app.

This way dynamic ip users don't have to keep logging into whatever they do to add there new ip.

That'd be problematic though, as some people browse the forum from a completely different network than that of their downloading machine. A possible future implementation (distant future mind you) is adding functionality for software to contact the server when the IP is updated, similar to DynDNS's Auto updater, however this isn't my choice to make.

Andy, what's the FTP Server software? It sounds like you've changed it since the last system.

I never see that happening since then we would need to make apps for every kind of platform that people use today. Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, Linux etc. It's not THAT hard to change the IP when needed, c'mon.

And the FTP server has not changed since the last system, it's the same software, just new scripts managing it in a different way than before.

I've had a slight problem with the new FTP: when I was connecting over IPv6, the FTP server wouldn't let me log in (530 Not logged in, access denied.). Only after I forced IPv4 (by adding www.betaarchive.com to my hosts file with IPv4 address, updating the IP and then connecting to the FTP directly with IP) I could log in.

Are you using an IPv6 tunnel? Does your ISP? Either of those can be to blame. The site doesn't do anything other than pick up the IP you enter on and lock it to that IP. It's a basic check that any site can do and if you use an IP check site you'll probably see the same result.

I'm not using a tunnel - my ISP offers IPv6 to anybody interested.

The FTP page did show my correct IP (and my FTP client connected to the IPv6 address of the FTP by default).

I have to report that I'm having the same problems too and I'm not using a tunnel nor is the ISP using one. I'm also using IPv4 and am encountering 530 (Not logged in, access denied).

oh, i get it andy i was wondering about downloading from two locations but you've got a point we don't need mass leeching or password leaks (again...) also where did the investigation go? what happened in the first place? and finally who and how did it happen? what was it with 7927?
