Because I have found only threads covering small parts of Half-Life betas, I decided to make a general discussion topic that covers all games in series to keep all discussion that doesn't need an own thread in one place.

Idea comes from The Unofficial Non-Retail Halo Thread.

Leaked builds (working title, build number, date, build 0 date, description):
  • Half-Life v0.52 (September 4, 1997) - leaked press tech demo.
  • Half-Life: Day One b676 (August 31, 1998, starts from October 24, 1996)* - OEM demo.
  • Half-Life b738 (November 1, 1998, starts from October 24, 1996) - final version with earlier binaries.
  • Half-Life b1672 (May 23, 2001) - leaked build of the cancelled Dreamcast port.
  • Half-Life: Source b-7 (September 23, 2003, starts from September 30, 2003)* - see Half-Life 2 b-4.
  • Half-Life 2 b-4 (September 26, 2003, starts from September 30, 2003)* - leaked by Axel Gembe along with large piece of Valve content by hacking Valve.
  • Source Particle Benchmark b2915 (October 31, 2006, starts from November 7, 1998)* - leaked The Orange Box engine particle simulation benchmark.

Build numbers are clickable and lead to their pages on BA wiki. No downloads in the OP. * means that the build is available on the FTP.

Unleaked but known builds (working title, build number, description):
  • Half-Life v? (December 16, 1997) - owned by Geoff Keighley.
  • Half-Life v1.07 - seen played by Gabe Newell in the secretly cammed video of Office Complex beginning gameplay.
  • Half-Life 2 b2342 - used for creating demo of e3_town_04 map (e3_town_02 demo).
  • Half-Life 2 b2345 - used for creating demo of e3_outpost_test map (e3_outpost_1 demo).
  • Half-Life 2 b2364 - used for creating demo of e3_seacliff map (e3_seacliff_1b demo).
  • Half-Life 2 b2371 - used for creating demo of e3_seafloor_01 map (e3_seafloor_sawyer1 demo).
  • Half-Life 2 b2378 - used for creating test version of Kleiner's Lab, Phystown and Bugbait videos (e3_alyx, e3_phys_01 and e3_bugbait_01 demos).
  • Half-Life 2 b2379 - used for creating test versions of Kleiner's Lab video (e3_lab_02 and 03 demos).
  • Half-Life 2 b2390 - used for creating Tunnels (final and test versions), Barricade and Bugbait videos.

If someone wants to find out the build number of the Dreamcast version then just use status in the console since the version command has supposedly been removed. I'd do it myself but it means getting out my keyboard and everything...

Anyone can launch Dreamcast build on an emulator? Mine hangs at "licensed by Sega" image.

Also, is it possible to scroll up console after launching a map? The build number is in server info.

Yes, you can only open the console after a map has loaded.

That's why I said use the status command.

Is there really build number when entering status concommand? I remember when starting a new server there is info including server number, build number and CRC.

If there wasn't then I wouldn't have suggested it.
From what I remember the server info when starting a game isn't shown in the Dreamcast build.

Started making a list of unleaked builds. If anyone spotted a pre-release build number somewhere, please post the number and its place here.

Where'd you find those numbers?

Demo files. There is server info in several demos (camming of which started before full server launch).

Anyone with DC and keyboard can tell me the build number (using "status" command)? I can't get the build working: it is not self-bootable and contains no IP.BIN or 0WINCE.BIN. Chankast and nullDC load the game, but crash at SEGA logo because they can't run Windows CE games, but Makaron and DEMUL, which can run WinCE games, load the build as music CD.

I remember getting Day One with a SB Live! card back in the day. I'll have to see if I can't find the disc to check which build it is.

I have heard rumors two versions of Day One exists.
So if you have original CD's, check what build it is.

You you be interested in Counter-Strike 7.1 Beta, 1.0, or any other Half-Life mods that were popular, sold on PC Gamer magazines, etc?

Remember: there is no console in Day One. Launch the game with -condebug, bind a key to "version" (also Day One has priority of .pak files over files on disc so if you modify a file you have to pack it back into .pak) and the build number will appear in valve\qconsole.log.

Only in BMS.

I have the leaked Dreamcast version somewhere... no idea. I don't think I even still have a Dreamcast though so...

BUT I do have Half-Life: Day One that came with a SoundBlaster Live! card and it has different build info than what was posted. I had to find PakExplorer and setup a new "version" command in a file so I could get it to print the version to the debug log because the console apparently doesn't work in Day One (I didn't know that). This is what I got.

I think it's Day One but on GOTY engine. Could you compare files? Is there any beta material?

HL2 Beta uses BSP v18, HL2 retail uses 19 and 20.
