Your CPU+GPU are fine, Windows 7 should run without slowdown (are you running CPU intensive apps?)
However, if you absolutely can't use 7, I'd recommend XP or Debian/Ubuntu.

Also, you could disable Aero if you get graphical slowdown.

Stay with Windows 7, it will be OK, you will get used to the speed (I used Vista on an Athlon XP and everything was fine). Even if you get more speed in Windows XP, it's outdated, so Windows 7 is your best choice.

well, for virtual machines, Windows 95 is not in good terms with AMD CPUs

if you can find it, I would stick to 8GB of RAM, it is the best ever

How much RAM do you have currently? 2GB is normal for that configuration, and you won't get speed increase by just buying more RAM.

also, 8GB is better for more 64-bit OSes on Virtual Machines together on your PC, I'm just using it and it runs perfectly :D

Probably an old hard disk or a slow one. Give it a bit of TLC and it'll be fine :)

no point getting more ram if your processor is slow... :)

ok so windows 7 slows down after two hours how many processes do you have running ? try cleaning your computer up of junk and do a defrag but if you absolutely can't use windows 7 then I would go for windows XP or a Linux distribution if you have never used Linux i would go for KDE other than gnome it's the best place to start on Linux :)

Yes there is if the system is using all of the RAM available...

2000 LE, XP x64 or Vista maybe in terms of older OS. Also, RAM speed may also be a factor. I am using 7 on my netbook with 1 GB of RAM and a 1.6 Ghz Atom, and runs pretty quickly. I don't know what my RAM speed is though. How old is your hardware?

The first thing I would do is actually find an Athlon X2 or something like that for the socket AM3. I had the board model before that (MCP61AM-PM) and it had a socket AM2+ AMD Athlon X2 4600+ that would probably out perform that Sempron because the Semprons are the lower end AMD processors. The motherboard supports the fastest being a AMD Phenom 1035T 6-core processor.

Now, Windows 7 32-bit because of ram. 64-bit would eat up some more ram than the 32-bit version but the ram isn't really that bad because I used mine with 2 gigs also (I now have 2.5 gigs and a 2.66 GHz C2D) but really the only thing I would really say is find at least a dual core processor.

Now, the only upgrade I say is this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103910. It's a 3.3 GHz Dual Core Athlon II for $70, and it's supported by your board according to the ECS website. Keep Windows 7 as it is now because it'll run much better on a dual core (based on experience).

Generally the hardware that make more slower the entire OS is the Hard Drive. If you are using an old computer, the thing that I can recommend you is to install another hard drive. You can use the new hard drive as primary unit or get the advantages of RAID system if your current hard drive uses SATA connection. The speed of the HD is visible during the boot-phase, when you open a big software, when you copy or when you want to search a file and when the OS want to use the pagefile. If you have money to spend, you can buy the SSD. The Hard Drive also is one of the few things that you will not change when you buy a new computer. You can buy a new processor now, but if you want to buy a new computer the next year, the only components that you can transfer are the RAM, HD and PCI Express' card. Also your CPU has one core and there isn't the core virtualization: Windows 7 run better on a multithread processors but Windows XP will not do more, so keep W7. Keep also Aero theme, because it's a way to use the GPU instead of CPU.

basically your best bet is to just use different operating systems and see what works best ... takes time but no one has your system but you ... i personally would suggest windows 7 or windows 8 build 7955 (if you like living on the edge ! it worked fine for me ....) , but windows 98 might be faster .

I would suggest Windows XP 64-bit. Another suggestion is to upgrade your RAM to 4GB and enjoy Windows 7.

I've had a sempron and sure it could be better but it can easily handle a few bits of ASM and C++...

I've used Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, OpenSuse and now my current favorite is Fedora 15, everything works great, it has the new gnome 3 and since your computer doesn't look like you do much gaming it should work great. If you do game then XP has always been good for gamers.
