I made a custom Windows XP using nLite, it's really easy. These are two tutorials helped me: teamtutorials.co and reboot.pro. I also founded this if you choose to customize ubuntu.

Me too, I made a custom XP, with many upgrades integrated, drivers (also SATA for hdd) and applications (Firefox, vlc, Fplayer...) already inside and removed stuff I don't needed such a welcome video, default pictures... I used n-lite! My os also has automated installation so that you just choose partition and then goes on himself (no need of inserting CD-key, setting up accounts ecc...) It's not difficult but took me a lot of testing in Virtual PC because at first it's not easy to make it working as you want and sometimes, errors occur in iso writing ecc...

Favourite OS NT 6.05.3718.0
vlite only works for 7 SP0 and even then breaks some things
rt7lite is far better

If you really want to start writing a real custom OS then learn Assembly and C/C++/BASIC/PASCAL and try to get some info at osdev.org, I started there, and it was like a kick-start to give Assembler a try and I am very satisfied of my work.
