Answer: They ran out of space on the rock.
Yup.

If people don't realize the economic/political problem that all the world is into, the world as we know it will end as there will be huge and worldwide protests and then political/economical changes (I'm not talking about revolution as communism mean it).

Well, i got some bad news for ya: we're all going to die... anyway
The real question is: what will happen when the Mayan calendar will expire? I guess it will be the time for JUNEan calendar ! (OK, a poor joke)
Or: - oh [censored]! we run out of space! - screw that, who will last to year 2012 anyway? (OK, another poor joke )
Anyway, i read somewhere that Mayans believed that not the end, but a new, better era will begin. Why are we so pessimistic then? Personally, i didn't think much about it but if i had to answer, i think nothing will happen... How many end-of-the-worlds have we already survived? And EVEN IF this one is real, we should live our life to the fullest, not in the constant fear of the world coming to an end.
(and about the (politics) world as we know it: i hope it will come to an end - the slavery and corruption everywhere (so-called capitalism), but i don't think it's got much to do with the world's end predictions)

*throws rocks at the scientists employed to work out this sort of stuff* These scientists have got better things to research like fixing upcoming problems in the Earth's atmosphere and stuff like that. They could also be developing a new technology. Instead they're employed to work out when the world will end but none of the big people believe it really, they just use it as an excuse for marketing. I mean, nearly everyone would believe someone with a degree in science.

They should be developing new, reliable, low-cost, low-energy methods of harnessing sustainable energy sources...

Ololololololololololol you just reminded me of the thread with the guy who dropped his laptop from a height to fix it, when linuxlove told him to. AHAHAHAHA.
Also, lol at Amazon's Science forum, and that almost reads as "Aperture Science forum" o_o

Here's my take: If you live in the United States, the end of the world that you now know is going to happen soon because lol economics, lol resources.
Here's the only theories on worldwide disaster that I give any belief to:
Polar reversal. Happens every *insert large number I forget* of years, but does happen on a regular timeclock (scientists say. I'm too damn lazy to look this up and give a source. Google it.) basis. The magnetic poles have been accelerating for years now, and the complete reversal will probably happen in our lifetime. Might be accompanied with tectonic activity (for an excellent book that the movie 2012 ripped most of it's [censored] from, read "The New Madrid Run")
Global snap weather change. AKA sudden ice age Not in my lifetime, but will happen sooner than you'd think. Global warming is simply part of a natural cycle in which the world heats up, melts its own poles, which causes the earth (ironically) to cool down MASSIVELY, launching an ice age. This was based on some book I read. I forget the title because lol dementia.
Intense solar activity. <- a bit sceptical of this one, TBH Read an article in Discover just last week about this. They predict 2013. What happens is an intense solar flare of more power than usual makes contact with earth, and it's polarity causes it to go right through the magnetic field. The result? Large electrical charges build up on the electrical grid, and every transformer in the world (and a lot of other electronics) fries. The long term result? Two years with no power. How will this impact you? Food everywhere spoils, automobiles no longer function because gas pumps aren't getting any electricity, and after 30 days the backup power systems of nuclear reactors worldwide will fail, leading to tons of meltdowns. This is probably the closest to an apocalypse as you will see. Competition for resources will be intense, and government will probably break down (if there's any left)
Complete economic collapse
Rioting, looting, government breaking down, order restoring after 30-40 years, new government in place. A currency that is backed by gold/silver/platinum like it should be and used to be.
That's my two cents. Notice none of these are slated to happen on 2012. I believe partially or fully all of these theories, mostly because of the scientific evidence that has been obtained from multiple individuals, and history.

And we just went through a major power outage in the earthquakes...

Derp? Yeah, because a giant ball of gas which takes light 8 minutes to reach Earth from, is going to affect the way the continental plates collide as they drift over the molten rock layers below.
Learn science.

Yeah, that's true, except for the fact that there are some pretty well known potential links between the sun and earthquakes. http://bit.ly/p9doxn Derp.
